Hi All.....

last Monday night I encountered a problem, with my losmandy G2 , during one of my local side walk...., and I think maybe someone here in CN, may also have encountered before and has resolved it.....

My Losmandy G2 is purchased end 2011, and I have been using it with my G11 mount without much problem...

But last Monday night, during the side walk, when I powered up the G2, the start up menu is missing......after the calibration screen appears....
It goes directly into the main or ready menu...
All the data that previously being installed are back to preset data.... and I need to manually key in, date , time, zone, long, lat, etc....
But this is not the end of it.... I could not get the system to slew to what I have requested... The mount just keep slewing for round and round...
I powered it off, and restart it , and the data that I just entered moments ago is lost again...
And after I repeated twice in front of the waiting crowds, I have no choice, but to do a third time, and manually swing the scope to the Moon and Saturn....
The drive is tracking perfectly.... without the need for me to do any more manually adjusting the cursor key....
I have written an email to Losmandy, and being advised to ship back both the controller and hand controller back to them for their checking...
As I am now in oversea, and can only do that after I am back, and also I am not in USA, but in Singapore, I just want to ensure this is not a small problem, that can be resolved , maybe by changing a battery, etc...

I hope someone in CN, who knew about this problem , can give me some valuable advice....

Regards

James,

I advise you change the battery in the main unit, it lasts about 2 years.

After changing the battery, you will need to update to the latest firmware even if you already have it installed, because maybe the firmware is corrupt. Since it is so easy to update the firmware, you might as well do it and the latest firmware is really good.

Please remember that after you change the battery and update the firmware you will need to re-enter you location and your time zone.

I am very confident that these steps will solve your problem.

Hi Hilmi....

Thanks for the advice...

This weekend when I am back form oversea, I will check the battery type form the main controller unit, and get it changed....

Even I am not sure on how to download the latest firmware, I think at least I can still save whatever setting I've inputted...

Go to this website for all things Gemini 2 http://www.gemini-2.com/

You should also join the Gemini II Yahoo group where you can contact the author of the site directly for support. This is not an official website or Losmandy group, but you will get excellent support from the Group.

There is a program which you can download from that website that makes updating the firmware much easier.

Does that mean every two years you have to reload the firmware after you put in a new battery? Mine is about the same age. Why would anyone design a system like that, it makes no sense. I can see the internal clock not working. Basic user data like location etc, should be stored on the flash drive and not subject to battery failure.

My personal experience was that when the battery finished some firmware settings got corrupt. It might have been a one off problem. Updating the firmware took 5 minutes. No big deal

Hi Hilmi and All....

This weekend when I returned back from oversea....

I searched around a few places but could find the battery type that is mentioned in the website.... CR2354.....

I can find very close type CR2320.....which is also different from the one, I removed from my G2 controller...
CR2354 has a step of recess, while most common sold battery are just plain round type....

Any idea if I still cannot find the right type of battery, just go the CR 2354 slim type and maybe add a small coin to increase the height....(All are 3V)

I had a lot of difficulty finding a batter but I eventually found one piece. The main difference between the two is the capacity. If you put a cr2320 the battery will run out very fast. You should be able to order the battery online without much trouble.

When I found a shop that sold the battery, I asked him to order a couple of spares for me so I can keep them in my tool kit.

Hi Hilmi.....

I have asked a friend of mine to assist me to source from those retailer that specialist in selling battery, and found the exact one....

So I am getting 4pcs, one to change my dead battery, another one for future use....

One for one of my friend who has recently purchased a new G11 G2 losmandy mount through OPT...

And probably one for anyone in my region, interested to acquire from me ....

BTW, I have one question to ask you, can I use my friend's SD card in his controller to copy into another Sd card, then I just use the copy one and put it into my controller as well?

I have no idea. The update software is the easiest way to update the firmware but you need to make sure you have the latest version of the updating software. The older one is not compatible with the current version of firmware

Store the spare batteries in your refrigerator (not freezer); this will extend their shelf life, so you may get 8 years out of this pack.

Hi ALL....

This weekend after I got my friends to look around for this special type of battery, and when I am back from oversea, I replaced one of the 4pcs that I received...

Upon power up the G2, the first boot up is the same as what I have described earlier, and after I have inputted all the data, and after off the controller and power again...., the quick start menu is back, and the subsequent, menu for mount, location, date/time, also is back as normal....instead of directly goes into the ready menu...

So I think it will be a good advice for anyone, who now owns the G2, to standby this special and not common battery, as when the battery really like a silent killer........

James Ling
