My EQ8 is in Sydney and I expect delivery before the end of the week. There has been an issue with delivery as total weight is 127Kgs and carriers want it on a pallet which has pushed up delivery costs.

Stay tuned :)

They will arrive in Canada in the middle of June, too.

One was publicly unboxed here in Brisbane yesterday. One of the guys wrote up a blog on the experience.

I was surprised to see the head was in one piece and in one big black travel case. It's so big, the guy in Sydney can't fit it in his car.

Thanks for the update Tandum. What was thought on the "polar assist" system? I'm trying to figure out if its worth buying.

You mean the polar scope? It looks odd and has to come off to get the head into the case so it would have to be aligned with RA every time. There is a manual on line and it looks like you align it like a finder scope.

Also if you loosen the tripod clamp bolts the center can drop down and bang into the knob that turns the center bolt to the head. The manual says to put 2 counter weights under the center piece so as not to drop it on someones foot :)

Here at last and eqmod works via the handset and pc-direct.

If you don't put a a pair of counterweights or something under the pier when you loosen the clamp bolts, the pier can drop and the clamp can bang into the knob for tightening the head to the pier and bend it. It's happened to some one already, it needs a stop.

And I don't think I can get the tripod into my Golf on my own the way it is. It has to be about 35Kgs (75pound) and has no hand holds on it at all. Once I get the head into the dome I'll try and figure out how to resolve that one.

It was supplied with a polar scope.

35 kilo tripod....I thought my CGEM DX tripod was heavy. Thank god for being 29 and no back issues!

As for the getting this thing in your golf, the metal case doesn't have a retractable hitch hidden somewhere?!

Congrats on being one of the first to get the EQ8 to run with EQMOD! Should be cloudy for the next month now... Enjoy first light. Provide feedback.

It' stopped raining this morning so I got the head into the dome. They are saying it should clear for the week-end so I can dial it in and get some numbers from it.

In the mean time, other projects have parts waiting to be installed :)

Yes thanks. I did see PEC off in the above pic. Thought maybe PEC on the mount itself was on. I have not used PEMPro yet. Quite impressive PE. You should enjoy that mount!

Ahh ok, no the mount is brand new, nothing in the handset plus it was on pc-direct to get eqmod to run. I have only just put it in the dome and polar aligned. PemPro can take that data and plug it into eqmod for pec correction, but I haven't got that far yet :)

[edit]
Turned on correction in eqmod tonight and it's now showing 2.18 peak to peak in corrected mode.

if this mount has that kind of PE consistently across the production, then IMHO, this is a complete game changer.

Wife and I bought new telescopes last fall, for our 'his and hers' kit ultimately headed into an observatory we hope to build over the next year. We just moved to an area with skies much darker than we had before, and are now shopping for a new home just outside of town, which will put us in a blue area on the LP map. We have a 12 inch RC and a TOA-130 destined to go in the observatory. With that kind of performance from a mount listed on the skywatcher site as MAP $3,799, I will buy two of them for the observatory.

Thinking about this a bit more. The mount has permanent pec, and you got one of the first ones. I cant help but wonder, if that one has already been set up for testing, and had pec trained into it before you got it ?

If so, that would explain the great results you have. If not, and that is truely uncorrected data, then I'm awfully glad I'm not in the mount manufacturing business today. I've been thinking the EQ8 will be a great value proposition if it's PE is on par with that of the EQ6. With PE on par with the much higher end stuff, and load capacity north of a hundred pounds (50kg = 110 pounds) then it just became 'the bar' in terms of mount value proposition, and it's a bar that's going to be very hard to beat.
