After much consternation (usual for me) I pulled the trigger on an 8SE with the Sirius Tech Soft Carrying Case that was an "open box" price, so it will be easy to load it all up and get outta Dodge. I have a C6 OTA so am anxious to see what the 8SE does to open up the DSOs a bit. And I am most hopeful that the alignment options work for my tree filled back yard. I really think I am an Alt Az guy after fussing with GEMs and will try my AP skills on the moon and planets and with my SkyTracker.

Glad to be joining the ranks of NexStar owners. It is very nice to have this dedicated forum, where there are great tips, stickies and, of course, you all, to help with use of this scope.

Now, let's see what I can get sold to help pay for this beauty.

Congrats. They are great scopes. So easy to setup. I can be observing 2 minutes after switching it on. Although I think my next larger SCT will be GEM mounted.

Congrats on the new 8SE. I just received my 8SE Ultimate Bundle from Telescopes.com. last Saturday 8th of June. Everything arrived in good shape and worked perfect right out of the box. Even the star pointer aligned with just a few turns of adjustment. I did receive a newer updated hand controller witch does not match the one in the instruction manual. But it works great and the newer buttons are really nice. I did a 2 star alignment, adjusted the backlash settings and had a wonderful night/morning of observing many targets before calling it quits. I am very happy with this NexStar 8SE,mount and the accessories.

I know y'all won't believe this, but I took delivery of the 8SE and the sky was clear !!! I know, unbelievable. But, here is the proof. Droid cellphone, afocal of our lovely neighbor in the night sky, with a Celestron 40mm Plossl in place.

Second light. In its natural habitat, my backyard. Modded the finder shoe to allow for swapping out my RACI, and a Green Laser Pointer (not pictured).

"Super" moon tonight. Better get the moon filter installed.

Added a couple of items to the 8SE to facilitate viewing. Lower left is a Scopestuff Fine Focus Knob, #FFK8 for Nexstar 8. Slips over the original focus knob and makes precise movement easier. I prefer manual as I have had a motorized unit before on another scope and did not like it that much.

Lower right is another Scopestuff item, #SFM2 - Starfinder Mount with Base Rail and Dovetail and the green laser. This lets me slew in the comfort of my observing chair, getting very, very close to the chosen object which is then usually within the view of the finderscope. It has an intermittent switch so the laser is only on when you push the button so you can try to avoid zapping passing planes and flying saucers. Both are mounted with finder shoes that allow removal for packing the scope for travel.

Pictured is an LV 8-24 zoom that works well for quick views. I have a 20mm centering eyepiece with LED for trying to nail down alignment more precisely.

Really loving this scope and hoping to get out to some dark skies and local star parties with it yet this summer.

That's a beauty!

I also snapped a great picture of the moon my first time out with my 8SE and iPhone5. I couldn't believe it either!
