With the rainy season upon us I haven't been doing much astronomy related. Yesterday I thought I could get in a bit of late afternoon solar observing but it was already too late. I happened to notice Venus low in the Western sky between my house and my neighbor's palm tree. It dawned on me that Mercury must be visible, and what looked like a star near Venus should be it. I very hurriedly grabbed my Dob and a couple of eyepieces and pointed my scope where I thought Mercury should be. I was instantly gratified by a beautiful view of this elusive planet. I was able to observe it for a while, seeing the phase and detecting a very subtle pastel peach color. Unfortunately, my scanned image doesn't show the peach color, which is barely detectable in my sketch as it was in my observation. Otherwise, I think it came out OK. I now have at least one sketch for Mercury in my notebook. Thanks for looking.

Thanks for all the good comments.

I'm looking at the sketch on my computer at work and it shows not only the subtle peach color, but also the white I added around the edge and blended into the peach. :foreheadslap:

Very nice! The skies are clear tonight so I may be trying out my new (to me) Burgess 127mm Refractor. This would be a good object to try.

Very nice Mercury sketch, it is a difficult planet to get a good view of.

Ed,

That's really superb work. The shaded in background around the objects u draw has become your trademark. Nice job with a very challenging planet to see clearly.

Wow, great work on Mercury. That is one planet I have not been able to see yet. Because of trees.

Do you ever see detail on it around the terminator? Craters?

First, thanks again for all the positive comments.

Unfortunately I am not able to observe Mercury to try to discern any detail. Living in suburban Miami makes it really tough for me to catch this elusive planet. It's more of a random sighting than planned, dedicated observing.
