I went camping this weekend and found out that my waterproof case was not as waterproof as I had assumed... Im going the break the entire telescope down, fix what needs to be fixed and while Im at it I might as well upgrade what I can. So far Im planning on flocking the scope and cleaning the optics real well. Are there any any other mods I ought to do while I have the scope apart? Is there anything I should do with the motors while the thing is apart?

Also is there any dis assembly instructions online?

The mirror coatings will be very delicate and very-easily damaged. Don't touch them at all unless it is really, really needed.

And mark the corrector rotation orientation so you can put it back exactly the same.

What size scope? GPS or Classic? How much damage exists?

Chris,
According to his sig, it's a 12" LX200 18V classic.

Nicholas,
You might check with Peterson Engineering; they have a lot of really nice LX200 upgrades, but I don't know if they're for classics or not.

Indeed! I overlooked that small nugget of info in the sig line.

I looked there and they do not offer anything for Classics. Any other ideas? If there are some upgrades that can be made Id like to do them while the thing is torn apart.

Thanks
Nick

Check the yahoo LX-200 Forums, there are a lot of files on Downloading there.
I would replace the old caps in it there are 5 or 6, they are small round Tan objects, especially C2 in the handset! That is the one that takes the hand ctrl out by burning through the ribbon cable and board, effectivly killing it.
Peterson EZ focus is nice. I wouldn't flock instead paint the inner tube Ultra Flat Black.
I would also put an active cooling fan in it.
You will more than likely need a helper putting the mirror back in as there is a rather hardy spring that assists the focuser.
The Autostar upgrade is nice but costs about $500.00.
George is great to work with. The Good handsets are selling on the Bay for up to $260.00!!! your half way there.
The Autostar turns the LX-200 into basically an LX-90 and not every Autostar function is there working but the most important are and George will "Tune Up" your motors if you send them to him, He used to do it FREE when you bought the
upgrade.. One Thing for sure I would only run it off 12V
if you have the origonal Tantalum Capacitors.
Well I've spent enough of your money.... :roflmao:

Join the LX200 Yahoo users group and talk to george himself.
He is a very open guy, I am not sure what features are not available right now because it seems he is always updating it!
I had it and it worked fine! the motors are a tad noiser and Slow Slewing had a kind of a slight vibration in the image BUT; I didn't have my motors tuned!
I'd sell my old electronics now and upgrade. if prices go any higher people will just go to Autostar and the used market will bottom out. I sold my old ctrl and MBD for $250.00! I had spent the 5 bucks or so and upgraded to Military spec Caps.. I still have about 15 of them if you are interested. PM ME..

Another option is pulling the OTA off the old mount and putting it on a more-modern GOTO mount. An Orion EQ-6 or Losmandy GM-8 would work great and can be done for less than a kilo-buck with a bit of shopping.

Yep, and GPS is available for it too.. The Deluxe version gives you all the functions. Super Deluxe gives you StarGPS as well.. http://tech.groups.y.../LX200Autostar/

I ripped my lx200 classic apart a few times
Nothing to it
Basic clean and re grease
Inspect bearings
Tightened the ra clutch bolts and applied loctite
Flocked the ota which was a huge pain in the @$$ with the felt roll from scopestuff
Had the mirrors recoated
Bobs knobs were the best improvement ever
Ill look for my picture thread

The center cover on the fork base that covers the bearing hold water,I used clear silicone sealant to seal it

The clutch bolts also hold the ring gear on,they came loose so meduim strenth blue loctite was needed, doing that made a huge diffrence in accuracy

Pulling off the corrector plate is easy
Make alignment markson glass, ring to ota relation, point the scope kinda angled up cause at some spot there are lil spacers that center the corrector plate to the ota, they may fall off

Ill look for pics
