i just bought a C8 and want to replace the 6x30 with an raci. i have an extra orion dovetail mount and am able to drill and tap that. my question is about the screws that hold the current base in place. are there nuts on the other side of the tube that will fall off if i back those screws out, or do they just go into threaded holes?

My older C11 is just threaded holes, no nut.

Orion sells bases for their finder mounts for SCTs. They are inexpensive, and I recommend them. That way you can go back to your old finder mount if you wish.

Agena also sells SCT orion compatible finder bases which is the one I got, depending on sales may be cheaper.

I did this with an Agena base and it worked fine. No drilling or tapping needed. The finder bracket screws don't have nuts on the other side. The only thing to be careful of is that you don't use screws that are too long.

The SCT finder saddles come with two flathead #8-32 screws of the proper length (abt. 1/2") these are not going to be stocked everywhere and going much longer risks damaging the primary. Do what Rod and Angry say. Sell the other saddle.

Stellarvue also sells mounting shoes for about any scope made, along with rings and some very nice 9x50 and 10x60 finder scopes. Highly recommended.
