Kopernik AstroFest is a celebration of the night sky and amateur astronomy. The 3-day event is held annually at the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center (KOSC). Both the KOSC and the Kopernik Astronomical Society (KAS) sponsor the event. AstroFest includes speakers on a variety of topics, demonstrations, an amateur astronomy roundtable discussion, the Kopernik AstroFest Solar Star Party, and nightly observing if skies are clear. Non-fire camping is allowed on the facility grounds for an additional cost.

Kopernik Observatory sports a 20” Ritchey-Chretien OGS Telescope, Celestron C-14 SCT, and a 6” Astrophysics F/12 refractor that will be open for use in observing under clear skies. During clear daytime skies, the legendary Barlow Bob will host the Kopernik AstroFest Solar Star Party (KASSP).

If you are an amateur astronomer located in the Northeastern US, we would love to host you at Kopernik AstroFest 2013.

This year's guest speakers will be:
  • Dr. Stefanie Milam – NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Astrochemistry Theory and Observation
  • Bob Berman – Astronomy Magazine and author of many nonfiction books.
  • Dr. Carolyn Porco – Space Science Institute, Cassini Mission, A Skype Interview with Q&A session
  • Barlow Bob - Solar Observing Enthusiast
  • Bob Piekiel – Telescope Optics Tuning
  • Dave Bishop – Astronomy Imaging Enthusiast
  • Damian G. Allis Ph.D. - Central New York Observers & Observing Exhibit (CNYO.org)
  • Patrick Manley - Meteorite Enthusiast
Please visit the AstroFest 2013 page for more information:
http://kopernikastro.org/astrofest/

Dates: Friday, 10/4/2013 - Sunday, 10/6/2013

Location: Kopernik Observatory & Science Center, 698 Underwood Road, Vestal, NY 13850 (Get Directions)

Unfortunately, due to the government shutdown, we can no longer claim that Dr. Stefanie Milam will be speaking at AstroFest 2013. As a NASA employee, she has been placed in furlough status, and in accordance with NASA policy cannot volunteer her time to this event. We are turning over every rock to get a replacement speaker in time with regards to comet ISON, and will post updates here as we progress in that regard.

It is our hope that the shutdown will be resolved prior to AstroFest.

Thank You.

Thank You.

But..... It will still be a *great time*, rain or clear.

I'm especially looking forward to the "astronomy club roundtable" for visitors from other astronomy clubs where we discuss mutual 'issues' and solutions, plus success stories. Last year we had members from 10 different astronomy clubs take part.

I'm also looking forward to winning several of the great raffle prizes - especially the 10-inch Dob! :jump:

Here’s a 'spot' on our local TV News ( web page ) that is obviously aimed at "locals" (ie, the public). However, the event is very much aimed at the amateur astronomer.

Our original keynote speaker, Dr. Stefanie Milam, is unable to attend Kopernik AstorFest due to the government shutdown. However, she has helped us find stand in subject matter experts on the two topics she was going to present on.

Boncho Bonev will perform the presentation titled "Comets, Spectroscopy and the upcoming Comet ISON Observing Campaign"
Geronimo Villanueva - Astrobiology Observations

Since the government shutdown interference came so late, these presentations will be done over SKYPE.

I look forward to see you there, and to hearing these intriguing lectures.

Thanks!

One of the great things about Kopernik's AstroFest is: You can still have a *great time* even if it rains! ...thanks to our wonderful facility, eclectic collection of astronomers, super presentations, endless opportunities to discuss astronomy, backyard observing, etc. It would be nice if our long series of clear nights would continue for Astrofest, but it looks like this year's event will look and feel more like NEAF.

My advice: come .... and you'll have a great time, despite the weather..... which *will not* include snow storms or hurricanes... but looks like it *will be* cloudy and maybe damp.

....plus there'll be great raffle prizes to win! :jump:
