Tristan,

Thanks for pointing that out. We are currently redesigning the slew button layout and this suggestion is something to think about.

I've been using SkySafari 3 on all the iOS7 beta releases including the Gold Master Candidate... with virtually no issues. Certainly none worth worrying about. I use a red plastic sheet on my iPhone and iPad when running SS, so I never noticed the white alert box.

The update for the basic version just downloaded to my iPhone 4S running iOS 6. It works fine until you try to use night mode. Then it crashes and won't open again. I guess I can't use the program until Wednesday.

Tristan,

This is not a simple incompatibility with the new release and iOS 6. We tested this thoroughly. First try rebooting your device. If the problem continues, contact us at our support email.

Tristan (et al),

I've looked into this and it is a real problem. Some code crept into the iOS 6 flow that should only be happening in iOS 7. We thought this had all gotten tested but obviously not.

NOTE: this only affects the basic version of the app. We are resubmitting new binaries today that will fix it. In the meantime, you will have to uninstall and re-install the app to get it working again. Just don't use Night Vision until the fix is released.

Sorry.

Yeah, I rebooted, uninstalled, reinstalled AND tested it on two other iPhones in the household (everyone in the house has a 4S) before posting about it to make sure it wasn't a one-off glitch.

David,

Why would you wonder if this was 4.0 when it is called 3.8.2? As we've said, SS 4 is not due out until around the end of the year. 3.8.2 is compatible with iOS 4 through 7. SkySafari 4 will be iOS 7 only.

Thanks for the clarification.
I was asking if it was the the fourth version because you were talking as if the next thing out was a new version, not just an update. You mentioned one version for iOS6, and another for iOS7, so when I saw an update saying it was compatible with both, I though this was a major, not just an update.

Thanks for that bit on V4; I'll be dragging my bum to upgrade due to bugs and just plain ugly UI, I'm loath to drop a rather good looking user interface.

On version numbers the software industry has a spotty history. For example I'm running Office 2010 on my work computer but Microsoft calls it version 14.0.7106.5001. Sun played similar games with its' OS version numbers and there are other examples of version number abuse (I blame marketing more than the programmers).

So for some of us that have been exposed to this version number game this is sadly, a legit question. Good know you guys don't play this game.

It will show objects below the horizon, but the entry should be grayed rather white. The list should show the "best" objects from your location that are observable sometime that night.

Sadly, it is inevitable. My iPad Mini us updating as I type, and my new phone is scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Bye bye iOS6.

Could be worse though. The changes at Yahoo are both hard-to-read and hideous (whereas iOS7 is just hard to read in the sunlight). A second grader has more design-sense than the graphic designers Yahoo hired.

I'm really liking iOS 7. And the redesigned SkySafari is looking really great on it.

Good news. Some questions:
What about the version 2 for android?
What is expected in the new version SS 4 for iOS?

SkySafari 2.0 for Android ( which we might call 4.0 ). Is coming along as well. It should be ready for release soon after the iOS version.

We are not releasing a list of new features yet. Sorry.

Hi Bill,

Would you expect SS 3 to run better on iPhone 5S? The faster process will help some, but the new co-processor should really help.

My GF has SS3 as well and needs to upgrade to a 5S, so I suppose I'll find out soon enough. If it works well enough, I may upgrade to a 5S just for your app.

Just a general question about SSPro Is it possible to list comets by magnitude?

Well, it will certainly run faster. Floating point operations, which SkySafari is heavily dependent on, are much faster on the A7. The graphics processor is also much better which should help.

I'm not sure the motion co-processor will help that much, certainly not with SkySafari 3. In SS4 we have changed how we handle compass and gyro integration. That might be more efficient with the M7 processor. We have not had time to explore this yet.

Coming in SkySafari 4. You wil be able to sort object lists based upon many characteristics.

Thank you for the response, Bill. Being able to sort by mag will be a biggie.

Great program, keep up the excellent work.

Any word on ServoCAT performance?

I have been experiencing a constant offset error on GOTO commands issued from SkySafari. The direction of offset appears to be the same also, but I need to confirm this.

The displacement is rather large, about 1/4 degree even after centering after using the Align function in the latest iOS release.
