metal gears?

ETX-125EC

One of the plastic gears in the DEC drive gave out. Does anybody know where or how to get replacement gears? This was an easy access, no major issues getting to the gear assembly and the single individual gear. In fact, no issues at all, pretty simple. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to send it off just to get this gear done, nor do I need to have it copmletely gone through at a big expense.

I'd like to find a metal gear or even gear 'kit' would be OK. I can get pictures and detailed information and description posted here if needed. Otherwise, I'd like to just deal directly with a supplier, one time around, and get the goods. EDIT: I took a picture to send to Dr. Clay, so I've attached it here as well. The two gears circled are mated and each has a matching bad spot. The actual bad teeth are at the arrows

I too have a dead ETX-125EC with same drive gears gone. And this is second time it has happened, with little scope use (cloudy Hong Kong). I sent whole Scope to Dr Clay for a repair and tune up but alas, did not stop the *BLEEP* gears from failing again.

I have taken OTA off mount and put ETX drive aside for likely disposal. But, if there really is a cheap solution (something better than the toy car drive) I look forward to hearing from others too. This bad experience drove me away from Meade forever! Sad.

I would carefully remove the defective plastic gear and send it to a gear maker then have the new gear made of metal.... :grin:

You may be able to find a mount with dead electronics for parts.
Place an ad in the Wanted section of the Classifieds.
You may be able to rebuild the plastic gears with industrial Epoxy, then file them to fit.

The Meade gears are Nylon and nothing is going to stick to them. Not even industrial epoxy.

I know the gears are not repairable. It's replace or part out. I'm checking on that gear website.

Yes, here's the link to a plastic gears manufacture place. Only 10 miles from me too but my ETX gears and electronics have gone.

Everything is super
If I buy a new mount I'll contact you guys

The last couple gears in the train are commonly the ones that fail. They bear the most torque. Gears like these can be made up of bronze gear stock. Cut to thickness, brazed together and bored for the axle. Probably not enough money in it for a production run.

I had the same gears break on my ETX-105. I was able to find gear parts from a Hong Kong company and for a few bucks rebuilt them. Has been working fine since I did this a few years ago.

I used some sort of epoxy / super glue to add a new lower gear section to the large gear in your photo. I then found a compound gear that worked great for the smaller gear (just had to bore out the center hole a tiny bit more).

I just found the bags the gears shipped with.

The smaller compound gear is labeled: Compound Gear - GC 0.5 - 12/24 - 20

The gear I used to add to the bottom of the larger gear is labeled: Spur Gear - GS 0.5 - 24 - 29. I removed the extended "axle" part of this gear and glued it to the bottom of the larger gear. I first sanded down the larger gear partially so I did not extend it / make it too much longer.

Attached is a photo of the original gear with broken teeth and the replacement compound gear. I used a drill to bore out the center hole a little more so it would rotate freely on the shaft.

Here is a photo of the spur gear I ordered to show you what I had to remove.

I cut off the "axle" part and the gear teeth lined up perfectly with the teeth on the bottom of the larger gear of yours that is broken.

I believe the total cost including shipping was less than $15. I ordered 3 of each gear in case I needed them again and/or made mistakes while working with them.

FYI... I contacted gearsmade.com to inquire about what it would cost (ballpark) to replace the plastic gears in the gearbox. He said it would be in the $500 range. While metal gears would be nice, looks like I will be sticking with plastic.
