Contrary to what majority say on CN that using a C11 ASGT for long exposures of a few minutes it's impossible at ~1700mm (~F/6) and also that guiding 1700mm with a finder scope is useless, I am happy to prove the opposite. :whee:

My setup is:
Telescope - C11 reduced at F6 (~1700mm) with AlanGee reducer + Telrad finder
Mount - CG5-GT pier mounted - aligned on 2+3 stars and one ASPA done
Guider - 200mmFL F/4 mini guide scope + 2x Barlow
Guide camera - LodestarC
Imaging camera- Canon 550D with MagicLantern
Software - PHD 2 Beta 1

I think I obtained better results with PHD2 vs PHD but it needs further testing. Even so I like more PHD2 user interface.
I couldn't use SX software successfully for guiding with LodestarC but probably is my fault. If properly used I don't know is SX software guides better than PHD2.

I confess I was very skeptical about LodestarC being able to guide well because:
- LodestarC + 200mm guider scope + 2x Barlow -> 4.23 arcsec/pixel resolution
- C11 at 1700mm (F6) + Canon 550D -> 0.52 arcsec/pixel resolution
- 1700mm is crazy for CG5-GT
- my C11 has in total ~16kg!

I also confess I didn't believe CG5-GT can guide well for 8 minutes with 16kgs on it and with a C11 with dew shield! :bigshock:
Indeed, there was no wind.

As a side note, I couldn't believe also how useful is the Telrad finder. On the other hand I don't like its appearance/plastic quality and finishing considering its price, but because is so useful I accept its faults.

This post is a homage to CG5-GT (and LodestarC).

I hope this will be useful for anyone crazy enough to buy and wonder if a C11 on a CG5-GT mount is usable and if it can be done some DSO photoghraphy with it.

Below is my setup.

Here is a single 8 minutes M27 exposure taken with the equipment above and guiding with PHD 2 Beta 1.

I forgot to say first M27 image was re-sized to fit CN.

Doesn't suprise me at all. I've been saying for quite awhile the mount is capable of carrying the C11 for visual use just fine...now a plug for imaging too, bravo! ;)
