My kids, 10&7 have both asked for a microscope for Christmas. I used to have one as a kid....just a cheap dept store model.

I'm assuming here that a department store microscope is the same as a department store telescope...not that good but maybe good enough to peak their interest.

Any advice on a type, make and model?

Take a look at Surplus shed, they get some good stuff in from time to time and offer discount/fire sales,I picked up the student one and its very nice, stay clear of department store junk.DA.
