Might have a Cave mirror, but little else looks to be Cave. A Unitron focuser would never show-up stock on a Cave main OTA.

I'd love to know the story behind that build.

Jon
Any clue if that price the restoration might cost more then it is worth. There is nothing in the listing that tells if the original optics are in the scope. Also, I do not see any cave markings on the ota

A Monolux with steep shipping cost

http://www.ebay.com/...pes&hash=ite...

Shipping is getting to be insane! This one weighs 50# and the case is 48" long. I think shippers now charge double for lengths over 47.875" This is my Black Saturday bargain (if there is such a thing) :jump: Should be HOC built and should be a very nice telescope.

And a buttload o' cash!

That's a lot of money for a thrasher, even if it is Cave and it is Byers.

My 10" Cave DK has a Unitron focuser:

Chuck.

Just make send your emails to the seller via eBay and keep them positive... Don't threaten anything.

I totally agree.

Just to elaborate... The situation I described above took over 2 months to resolve itself. VERY bad. And I waited too long to get eBay/Paypal involved.

I'll give it until the end of next week to show up, in the absence of a reasonable explanation from the seller (death in the family, etc.). If no scope or no communication by Friday, I'll open a case.
It probably doesn't happen often, but there is also the chance that the seller died!

People do die. Around 10 years ago I bought something on ebay, and it either never arrived or was non-working if it did. (I forget what it was). A few months later I stumbled on it again, either the item or an eBay message in email and I wrote a letter to the seller. A couple of weeks later, I received a very apologetic letter and a cash refund. The letter stated that his wife was the seller and she had died. He knew nothing about her eBay selling other than she did some, and asked me how to get in touch with eBay to see if there were other people like me he should send a refund to. I did, and also told him to contact Paypal, to see if there was any money in her account.

Sometimes you will see someone with perfect feedback, and then a streak of recent negatives along the lines of "never got it, no communication." I wonder if illness or worse has afflicted the seller.

I have 2 back plates off Cave Cass scopes and both had Unitron super focusers on them. These both came stock on Cave scopes and were upgraded by the owners.

I would love to have that Cave Cassegrain. I can tell its my kind of project, a time capsule from 1974 and what a beautiful scope all finished I'm sure.
I don't relish the thought of driving down to San Diego in December though, neither does my Volvo wagon since the overdrive is not working.
I seem to be more sane the older I get and realize it will be a back breaker and not get used here at my house. I already own some stunning hanger queens while my StarMax 5" MCT gets all the observing time, in the winter at least.
Heres another large Cass all finished, a Starliner:

That Starliner is amazing. It would be the perfect observatory scope.

I really had to bite my fingers to not bid on this scope the other day. Strange to see both HOC and the Royal Astro symbol on the same label. Might have an amazing little lens. Hope someone here bought it so we can vicariously enjoy the first light.

Ow, my fingers hurt...

Hard to say of course. Lots of due diligence needed here on the part of the buyer. I'm still not sure on the size either. Cave does not list a 14" Cass in their ads or catalogs so maybe it is a 12.5". Looks like they have fixed the name of the optical system in their auction. It's not a Case Grain anymore. But someone has fed them some incorrect information in one of the questions about the auction.

It is a cute little thing, but a toy none the less. For a long time this past year I flirted with the idea of adding a 40, 42, or 50mm Unitron like the #740 or the #127 or a Zeiss 50 x 540 Teleminor to my collection. But I realized that I would be getting it just to have it and would probably use it once. I love 60mm-class scopes and have five of them. They actually show quite a bit and are wonderful one-step setup grab and go scopes. So there really doesn't seem to be a point in going smaller, at least to me. I would just be getting a 40 or 50 mm scope to have it and it would just wind up in a box on a shelf in the basement telescope vault.

That Starliner is really nice. Tweaked optics, just need a good observatory. I'd say the price is right in line.

I agree. I had been afraid to log in, but shouldn't have been. It's not cheap, but with all that it has and how nicely set up it is...

I'm head over heels in love with that. My 60mm Carton is one of the last I'd surrender. I can't imagine how fine that 4" is.

No can do, however. No can do.

You get it!

Includes 3 Meade Research Grade eyepieces. Would be a much better deal if you can pick up in San Diego, as shipping is $100. http://www.shopgoodw...e-2000mm-F10...
