ON the weekend Old Melbourne Observatory celebrated its 150th Anniversary (albeit a coule of months late)
there was a nice re-enactment with governor of the day henry barkly & government astronomer robert ellery pictured

more celebrations, in the smaller dome in the background a 4" photoheliograph is held -put in for the 1874 venus tansit - has photographed every transit since. the larger dome houses a 8" refractor put in at the same time -gives great planetary views

lastly the showpiece of the Observatory in its heyday, the Great Melbourne telescope -a 48" speculum mirror made in Ireland -the then largest telescope in Sth hemipshere & world in 1869
