Now I am in the process of replacing all the caps for protection.

In the cheap area ($650-700) you're pretty much limited to the non-goto Orion Atlas (Synta HEQ-6) For about a grand there's the goto Atlas or Celestron CGEM. At $1500 there's the CGEM-DX, Losmandy G11 (not Gemini) and the iOptron Q45. The $800 Meade LX80 would have been a good choice it it wasn't such a disaster. There's talk of a LX85 coming, but I wouldn't want to be an early adopter. I have a LX80 I picked up for $100 with bad electronics that I'm playing with to give you an idea of the value of that investment.
I've got a push to Orion Atlas, a Losmandy G11 and probably enough parts to convert your LX50 mount to Autostar goto for sale. PM me if interested.

For what its worth I de-forked my lx50 10in and mounted it on a CGEM.
Works like a charm now. This mount is up to the challenge if you decide to go that route.

I am sure it will work out great. The biggest problem is that here in Mn. it is downright COLD out there!!

The biggest trade-off in going from a fork to GEM is, of course, that you end up needing to do a meridian flip at some point in the night with a GEM. This wasn't a big deal to me, but it might be to another person.
In any case, this is actually one of the easier things you can do with the LX-50... I am glad I did and never looked back.
