5mm Vixen LVW Vs. 6mm TeleVue Delos:

Yes, I have owned both, but that was long ago!

From my memory, the 5mm LVW had excellent correction in a fast scope, it had really good eye relief and from a session I had with one observer a year or so ago, I had one of the best views ever of Jupiter. The 5mm LVW had neutral color fidelity from what I recall, lateral color was there, but not really distracting.

Enter the 6mm TeleVue Delos: From memory, it had excellent correction, really good eye relief, (better than the 5mm LVW), stars were pinpoints with neutral color fidelity, and the views in this eyepiece felt very immersive. No doubt that transmission will be better than the 5mm Vixen LVW.

10mm Delos, (barlowed)....

But here's the kicker: I could get another 6mm TV Delos or a 5mm LVW, or I could get a 10mm TV Delos and barlow it instead of using the 5mm LVW alone.

Your thoughts?

Cheers!!!

What scope though? Will you use a 10mm more than either 6 or 5?

That would be my determining factor since I don't mind using a Barlow at all.

10" F/4.7 reflector. I guess I will put it back into my sig again.

What I am contemplating here is having the 10mm Delos plus a 6mm Delos and barlow the 10mm Delos when I want to, or get a 10mm Delos and a 5mm LVW leave the barlow out.

Huge savings if I just pick up a new 5mm Vixen LVW as opposed to getting the 6mm Delos + Barlow.

Might just pick up the 5mm LVW now !!!

Markus,

I seem to recall that you don't like using Barlows?

Nuff said.

Mark,

In my opinion, it all depends on where you are in the development of your eyepiece case. When starting out, you will barlow the few quality eyepieces you have, as you slowly build up and acquire more. Later, you tend to fill in the magnification blanks and upgrade with quality, using your barlow less and less. I truly believe you fall into the latter category here, and deserve both. I use a 10mm Delos, and a 6mm Radian sandwiched by 5mm and 7mm Pentax XW's, and am quite happy only using a barlow occasionally.
Your call, hope this helps.

David

Hi David, and Welcome to Cloudy Nights!

You have to understand that Markus here has owned more eyepieces than have been made, so that is the only reason that I thought your post was funny.

I think that you gave very good advice!

Thank you,
-Chuck

You're right Chuck. I've used them for years and I prefer not using them at all now.....but I am kind of in a dilemma.

I'd have to sell off my 34mm ES 68 which is pretty much brand new in order to get the 6mm Delos......or, I could keep the 34mm ES 68 and get a 5mm Vixen LVW.

Isn't it FUN mulling over which eyepieces to get? LOL

Markus, my 2 cents... Get the 10 & 6 Delos. Having two eyepieces that get you 120x and 200x is better than 120x and 240x with no option in between. The 6mm (200x) will also see more use, in general, than the 5mm (240x). Then when you factor in that the 10 and 6 are Deloi? No question! Deloi are so immersive that it is droolworthy!! Barlowing the 10mm should not be a problem.

Markus,

Your eyes, but my advice...

That 34mm is mighty nice to have, so get the 5mm LVW.

Don't Jump! - Take you time to think about it...

The 6mm Delos will wait for you, if you decide you want it, and if you decide to sell the LVW to get it, you won't lose anything - But you knew that...

Yea...but 6m Delos + Barlow is looking mighty expensive...and I would have to sell the 34mm to get it. I would use 200x a bit more, but I love globs, and small galaxies, and planets.

240x on those targets is sweet! + the 34mm will get lots of use on larger stuff as well....it sure is a nice EP !!!!

So...It's the 5mm Vixen LVW!!!! (I really don't like using barlows...but I will if I have to...and I could get one for the 10mm Delos to get me a 6mm equivalent).

Don't sell the 34mm. It's a keeper.

Well, I didn't read carefully enough to see that getting both Deloi would necessitate selling the ES68 34mm. I agree that doing so would not be wise, since you're a star hopper and a quality low power finder EP is a must.

I agree!

I had the 34mm ES 68 all packed in the box....and I took it out again and just looked at it and thought..."What the heck?"

This is a really nice eyepiece. So I am keeping it and I will have a 34mm ES 68, 24mm ES 68, 10mm Delos and 5mm Vixen LVW.

I have read some REALLY GOOD REPORTS on the 10mm Delos !!!! :jump: The 5mm LVW is no slouch either.

No barlow at this point.
