Recently started astrophotography. Was using fairly close polar alignment and an auto guider. Stars were not pinpoint, so I decided to finally tackle star drift method to get alignment near perfect. Had tried on several sessions but could not get it. Read and reread different sites on how to do it and finally understood that it didn't matter if up was north or south, which was the major question I kept hanging up on what with the refractor inverting the image! not to mention the mirror diagonal. Well I got all that figured out but after several attempts on several occasions I kept getting massive movement east and west even after I should have been close. Had about decided something was wrong with my mount . Happened to look at the page on my Mach 1 hand piece where you can reverse the directions of the NSEW buttons. Now granted I have only had the thing for about 10 years as I bought it new out of the first batch of Mach 1's.

Then I noticed that the tracking rate was on lunar, not sidereal! :tonofbricks:
In case anyone has ever wondered, I have proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that you cannot declination drift align on a star if you are using the lunar tracking rate! You heard it here first.

Moral of the story is don't misunderestimate the human power to make a simple mistake that can really screw something up!

Right there with you. My worst one was forgetting to set the laptop not to go to sleep. Checked the first two subs, went to bed and got up six hours later on a perfectly clear night to those two subs! Computer was sleeping like a baby!

Had I not read an article on making an AP checklist, a sleeping laptop was definitely in my immediate future. ;)
