There seems to be a distinct lack of social networking for astronomy folks in the Austin area, so i started a FB page. If you are interested in joining, feel free to do so. I'm going to set up a star party as soon as there are enough people interested to make it worth doing

Here's a link to the group

Please explain. Austin has an active amateur astronomy group, http://www.austinastro.org/. They host monthly meetings, as well as observing and outreach events. -Kent

yeah they charge for membership. I don't pay to be part of a group of amateur enthusiasts, so i'm assembling a group of people who enjoy astronomy and want to get together on occasion

Looks like they have some benefits for membership...It also is used in outreach programs and other club functions ( I would assume).

The Austin Astronomical Society is a very active club. We have lots of outreach opportunities, a dark sky site (perk for members only and their guests), monthly meetings with presenters, monthly Practical Astronomy sessions prior to the meetings, plus much more. Members also receive discounts on various astronomy-related events and media.

The dues go toward club expenses and the club is non-profit.

Everyone is invited to come to the meetings (free) to see what the club is about and to enjoy the presentations. You are also welcome to attend the AAS monthly public star party night at the Eagle Eye Observatory at Canyon of the Eagles if you'd like to share the night sky with us. :D
