Jupiter f25 RGB Flea3 Avg Seeing 1/10/14

I went back to the Flea3 tonight under 3/5 seeing and haze, using my 2.5x powermate a couple hours before transit trying to beat the incoming clouds. The last 3 avi sets derotated & combined in WJ. Colors seem more vibrant than my prior tries with the ASI120MM, this time with no extra saturation added. The image size is a lot more flexible with the Flea enabling various barlow / extension combinations. It would be nice to catch good seeing with this massive 46+" disk.

In an effort to pull out more detail, I did make 2 IR-685 runs at the end of this session. The filter "darkness" required settings in between G & B to match histograms vs the RGBs. The IR channel appears over sharpened using the same Reg6 settings, so I decided to blend the IR-RGB with RGB, in this case 50/50

One final blend, 33% IR-RGB + 67% RGB which seems optimal for this average data set?

Good work Steve! That blending really brought out some fine details. Color balance seems really good for that combination, something that is fairly difficult to achieve. Well done! :waytogo:

Paul, Glenn, Paul, Thanks for the compliments! I only took 2 IR runs and should have made a 3rd to be consistent with the 3 RGBs. My logistical issue is that the IR is a screw on filter, not on my wheel so I have to do it at the end. I am considering getting a more gentle IR610 and replacing the L filter on my wheel (since my grand plan for mono deep sky never materialized) but it has to be sent out and with my luck I'd miss the only 5/5 night of the year. I started taking ASI120MM data but after several runs at 0.15" resolution switched back to the Flea at 0.16". With my smallest barlow lens and shortest tube I cannot go incrementally lower with the ASI. I still need to process the ASI data. For marginal seeing, the 33% IR blending seems to help the detail. From now on, I'll end my Jupiter session with 3 IR runs.

The IR blend is very nice. I still can't get a nice Jupiter. Not even going to bother posting the last one I did. Seeing was better, but also snowing which likely contributed to my poor image.

That IR really helped a lot!

According to weather forecast I will have 2-3 hours of clear sky on sunday finally, I bet seeing will be rather bad and I will try this idea also.

Andrew, Paolo, Michal,Mo, Thanks! What is interesting about the blending in of the IR-RGB data vs RGB only version, is that highlighted details cannot be adequately pulled out with any amount of deconvolutions or sharpening without gaining a ton of noise from the color data alone. Since being able to image in excellent conditions is so rare, I wonder if this IR blending can help the other planets like Mars & Saturn?

While I'm not a fan of blending in near-IR to RGB Jupiter images, you've done probably the best blending near-IR that I've seen here. Looks like a nice data set too. Nice work!

I have found in the past that mixing Ir into my Jupiter shots resulted in colors off much like your right shot, IR-RGB. I really like what you did and I came up with a similar scheme using Red instead of Ir. I used Red because, as you said, of logistical problems. I've been using the red as a luminosity in PS and then pulling at the curves to bring out the right contrast, then I set the opacity to taste. Right now it's all buried in some photoshop actions that I saved. Which for those PS users if you don't know about you MUST go learn.

Troy, John, Mike, Thanks for the positive comments! I'm not a fan of blending either but when the seeing is marginal and you stand outside in the freezing cold for 2hrs, you'd like to end up with a decent image so finding a new trick is always desireable. The blending here was done in WJ, not PS. Going 33% R-RGB 67% RGB should work also assuming the R data is as good as IR. The key is to not over do it

I like these Steve! I'll never be called a purist and it can be argued all day long about some of the things we do to get images. If done carefully, blending can have excellent results! If it ever clears here, I'm going to have to finally give my ir filter a try!

Steve, thanks! I've tried collecting L data in the past, but it never seem to add quality to my Jupiter or Saturn images. I suspect that the IR742 is too dark for this vs IR685. There's really no harm in collecting a few IR avis and decide later if the data is needed. Good luck with the seeing!
