Odd problem with a mate's ME, it won't home any more. Anyone had a similar problem?

It was working fine, now it won't home.
The motors turn briefly as they are supposed to.
The encoders look fine, as do the homing sensors.
We swapped the RA/Dec motor feeds and altered their index angles in the software, same problem exept it then gives errors on both axes board leds, not just the ra led.
It has a sound 48V power supply.
The balance is ok.
All cable connections are fine.
No strained or frayed wiring.
The belts aren't too tight.
The worms aren't too tight.
Can't see any obvious dry joints on the board (4000)
The RA and dec leds on the board flash when homing fails.
The leds on the panel are lit.
It beeps as it should to start but then stops halfway through 'homing'.
We reset the parameters to default in The Sky 6.

Run out of ideas.....

He already has and he's already being helped by SB. The problem just hasn't been solved yet. Doesn't sound like home sensors if the motors stop long before they reach the home position. If they reach the home position, but don't home, then it's the home sensors. Maybe a motor wiring problem or an obscure electronics board problem? Spring plungers needing adjustment? If so, then those are very easy to check and adjust. Worn worm lock knob? Duct tape will solve that temporarilly until they can be replaced. But I don't know.

Did he unplug the joystick and try homing?

Yes the joystick seems ok. Bisque bros have suggested we try the motor capacitors next. I was hoping someone may have had the same problem and had a resolution.
Shipping it back would cost almost what he paid for it so we need to try the cheap options first. He's happy to get any parts required but a board isn't cheap. We'll have a go at the motors first.

I know they are ready to go, but I wasn't aware the upgrade kits for the ME were shipping quite yet. As of the time I wrote this post they still weren't available for ordering in the full online store. Doh, I guess I should call the front desk and try ordering one.
