I have read in the posts of this thread and after looking through 153 pages of posts, I cannot remember what was said about this suggestion and no desire to do a 3 hour search to find it again.

After seeing pics of members scopes of their CG5 and tripod alignment, do I place the counterweight shaft over the tripod 'north" leg or between the "south" tripod legs in the middle? :foreheadslap:

Over the North leg. It will give you more stability.

You can do it or leave it alone. Even at 30-degrees latitude I've never bothered with this and never had a problem--with an SCT on the mount.

North leg if you are using a C11.

If you place it between the south legs, when there is no OTA on the mount, the CG wigth counterweights gets pushed way out to almost the circle of the legs.

A small bump in the dark will send your mount crashing to the ground.

At least that was what happened to me one night.

I was using a C9.25. I took the OTA off and was behind the mount putting something away.. I bent down and bumped the mount and the next thing I heard was a big wet thud as the mount head crashed into the ground.

This was an aluminum leg mount, so perhaps the steel leg mounts are more resistant to this due to the extra weight of that leg, but I was only using a C9 with two counterweights.

Depends on where you are from. Less than 30 degrees you should have it between the legs.
