RTMC Astronomy Expo is planned for Memorial Day weekend this year, May 22 to 26. We have some great speakers lined up, along with our annual imaging workshop. We are planning to expand the Swap Meet, and continue the Beginners' Workshop with its star party and presentations. We are determined to make this year's RTMC a better experience for both our participants and our vendors. We are also linking up with the new Starlight Festival in Big Bear City, so that visitors can enjoy both events. Saturday night will feature a special star party to honor the late John Dobson. I will provide new info as news develops, and will do my best to answer your questions. We are optimistic about RTMC 2014 and hope you'll join us.

Martin Carey (New RTMC Board member as of July)

For newer folks (and older folks with poor memories), it helps to use the full name and location for posts like these.

That's too close to home to miss. Unless I have an emergency come up, I'll be there this year.

Yes Photobud, a better description is needed. The Riverside Telescope Makers' Conference and Astronomy Expo has drawn together telescope enthusiasts since the late 1960's, still held on Memorial Day weekend. For much more information, here is the link: http://www.rtmcastro...rg/general.html

The RTMC was a real disappointment the past several years. Major vendors didn't even show up. I hope it gets back to what it was in the early and mid-2000s

My son Ian and I will be coming up this year - but are a bit cautious. Fewer vendors - fewer telescopes. Is the new Starlight festival going to bleed off venders? It is a bit of a mystery by itself - a science lecture series in Big Bear??? I don't get the connection.

Any word as to whether the guy with the 70" scope (April 2014 Sky & Telescope)is going to make it? He said in the magazine he was going to try.

RTMC is coming back, and we intend that the Starlight Festival and RTMC will be complementary to each other. The SLF is geared more to the beginner crowd, as their website says, while at RTMC-Astronomy Expo, we attract the serious amateur. We are also encouraged by the fact that right now, both our visitor and vendor registrations are ahead of what they were this same date last year. And as for Mike Clements and his amazing 70" dobsonian, we would love for him to come to RTMC-AE. :jump: I'd make sure he had help setting up. It's time the world saw that scope close up. Maybe some of you can help me persuade him.

I'm already getting the RV ready. And I have had a few buddies contacting me to get some details.

I plan to go to both events. Hope to see you all there.

If you are attending RTMC and Starlight and are interested in doing some sidewalk observing in the village, please stop by the Sidewalk Astronomers booth. We are building and donating an 8" dobsonian telescope to one of the volunteers at RTMC or Starlight and we can use as many telescopes as possible in the village. You can also contact me at sidewalkastronomers@earthlink.net

My intention is to go on the 22nd to the RTMC, stay that night and the next, and then try the starlight festival on the 25th. I'll see what happens

Just a little concerned when I see so few sponsors listed on the RTMC page...

Alex is right, things are looking up for RTMC this year. Rumors of RTMC's death are greatly exaggerated. Based on what we see now, visitors and vendors are both going up, and we have some attractions that we didn't have last year. There are more vendors coming than we show on the RTMC website. Here are a few of the good reasons to come to RTMC-AE this year:

1. Vendor and visitor numbers are looking better.
2. We have some terrific speakers: Linda Spilker from JPL/NASA on the Cassini mission; Jeffrey Roloff will remember John Dobson; and Mike Clements will tell how he built the world's largest portable telescope.
3. We'll have, for the first time, with NASA Kepler project scientist and scifi writer Steve Howell will join authors Dave Summers and Anna Paradox for our first scifi panel discussion.
4. A great star party on Saturday night to commemorate John Dobson.
5. A Swap Meet expanded to all of Saturday, so if you have something to sell, bring it on over.
6. If you have Verizon, a new antenna was built nearby, so we now have cell phone coverage!
7. The Beginners' Star Party is going strong, with two 12" telescopes and friendly guides to show you around (I'll be there).
9. Star Light Festival nearby.
8. Nice weather forecast, in the forties at night and seventies daytime, with mostly clear skies.

Sounds good, the wife and I will be there Thursday and we are bring a few telescopes to sell at the swap meet. Hope there are lots of folks coming and a few more vendors would be nice also. We usually spent our astronomy budget at RTMC, so, lets hope that we can do that again.

Will the swap meet still be going on Sunday?

I understand it is on the schedule for both days (for the first time). Whether it has the participation both days remains to be seen. I plan to attend it Saturday. I will be busy with the astroimaging workshop on Sunday.
