For several nights this week the lunar North Pole has been tilted more towards earth due to favorable lunar libration in latitude. It has been a good opportunity to view craters such as Whipple, Peary, Byrd and others. I had a clear night with average seeing so I took advantage of the opportunity to sketch the illuminated region near the pole. At my location the Moon was at more than 60 degrees above the horizon which also helped with the time needed to complete a sketch.

Sketching and Equipment:

For this sketch, I used black Strathmore 400 Artagain paper 9” x 12”, white and
black Conte’ pastel pencils and blending stumps.
Telescope: 13.1 inch f/6 Dobsonian and 6 mm eyepiece (333x) riding on an equatorial platform
Date: 04-09-2014, 01:00-02:35 UT
Temperature: 3° C (38° F)
Clear, calm
Seeing: Average - Antoniadi III
Transparency 4/5
Colongitude 16.2 °
Lunation 9 days
Illumination 63.9 %

Hi Frank,

great sketch showing an area which can not be observed easily.

>Temperature: 3° C (38° F)

Not too cold for a trip to the North Pole, isn't it?

Cheers,

Achim

A beautiful north polar sketch of a region not seen too often, Frank. I've be doing some lunar imaging of the days leading up to the 9th, but it clouded out last night and I didn't catch this phase of the lunation. Its nice to see you caught the region so magnificently. Carol L posted about this region in the Lunar Observing Forum.

Achim, Mike, Carlos, Eric and Tom,

Thank you all for your generous comments on my sketch.
--
Achim - been too cold and cloudy to do much sketching at the eyepiece until just recently
--
Rich - Yes I see Carol L. posted the favorable lunar tilt.
I was going to wait one more evening to sketch and am glad I didn't for I would have been clouded out.

Frank :)

Frank,
Beautiful work. I imagine the Eq platform is a pleasure to work with for sketching. I am going to get one some day. My youngest daughter loves to view the moon. Even at 3 she picks it out of a blue sky.

Roland, Tamas, Christian, Ken, Tom,

Thank you all.

Ken - If you make one or buy one you will especially enjoy it for sketching.

Excellent, I like using the libration oportunity to sketch some Moon difficult profiles as you do.
