I found myself patiently checking the skies as midnight approached. I was not certain that it would clear off at any point before totality ended. Just after 01:45am clouds began to break showing the partial phase of the eclipse for brief periods.
Eventually I did manage a rough sketch of the lunar eclipse with the aid of a 4.25 inch f/5 Dobsonian telescope. It was somewhat difficult because clouds were blocking the view off and on and small bursts of snow accompanied these clouds. I decided to stay at it and managed good short intervals of sketching time when the southwestern sky cleared.

Sketching and Equipment:

Telescope Used: 4.25” f/5 Newtonian on an Equatorial Platform
25mm ocular at 22X

White sketching paper, assorted: pastel pencils; colored pencils; oil pastels,
blending stumps

Date: 04/15/2014, 02:30am – 03:30am local time (CDST)

Weather: Frequent fast moving low clouds with snow, 28° F (-2°C)
Seeing: 3/5
Transparency: 3/5 to 0/5

Frank :)

Mike, Tom and Tommy 5,

Thank you all. Not as bright at totality as the eclipse of 2008 visible here.
Every time the clouds would roll through I had to stop and cover the telescope and sketch pad as it would begin snowing.

Frank :)

Frank,

An excellent observation of a beautiful total lunar eclipse. You have captured the red color of the eclipse very nicely. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Regards,
Carlos

Great capture of a beautiful copper Moon Frank! You displayed incredible fortitude and patience, as well as anti-freeze that must have run through your veins. For me it was a tee shirt and shorts event, thank goodness. Just a wonderful sketch, you've got to be pretty pleased with this one!

I was able to complete a full eclipse sketch sequence of 15 images, and Erika Rix said that she would happy to animate it for me. I'll post it in this forum when she gets it done.

Christian, Carlos, Ken, Michel, Achim and Rich,

Thank you all. I was lucky to have this opportunity.

Rich, I retreated indoors several times when it clouded over so I was not cold.
I look forward to seeing your sequence of sketches when Erika finishes. 15 - wow.

Frank :)

Roland, Tamas and Jef.

Thanks guys.

Although I have seen a good number of lunar eclipses dating back to the late 1950's they always provide visual pleasure.

Frank :)
