It’s nearly time for my monthly naked-eye New Moon spotting challenge. Some sharp-eyed North Americans might spot the less than a day-old Moon on April 29. Others should have better luck the next evening.

My more detailed article describing the waxing crescent Moon’s first appearance of the coming lunar month appears under the links for my preview graphics at www.CurtRenz.com/moon

Photos and descriptions of the young Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include your location, date and time with zone.

Below is link to a photo that I shot from Arlington Heights, Illinois of the Old Moon in the New Moon’s Arms above Mercury. The Moon was aged 1.3 days on 2007 MAY 17 at 21:10 CDT.

Thanks. The link to my photo is now correct. The link to my Moon webpage appears to have been correct all along.

Taken this evening at 20:51 CDT in Nacogdoches, TX with a 250mm telephoto lens. The moon was approximately 31.5 hours old.

The two stars near the moon are HIP 19036 (above left, magnitude 6.6) and HIP 18735 (above right, magnitude 5.85).

Now that's a beautiful picture of the "Old Moon in the New Moon's Arms". Thanks for sharing.

Windy for several days, here. Seeing: poor! 29 April was a no-go. Tonight, 4% illumination.
