Jon -- like you, I've only seen reference to the 4mm Orthostar in print but never an actual unit.  Of course, we know that Meade released a 4mm RGO so maybe (just maybe) Tom decided not to offer it even though Nikon was manufacturing it.

I agree with you about the dating of the 'lighter' barrels, too.  My Orthostar set (less the 20mm WF) were original to my 12.5" f/6, which is a 1974 scope, so it's not by much.  My 20mm WF I acquired later, so I'm not aware of its vintage -- though it also has the 'lighter' barrel.  Bob Luffel and others confirmed they had Orthostars from pre-1975 of the same barrel type.

And I also agree with you that Towa likely did not make these.  I don't know why Gary made that comment, since it was clearly in several Cave publications that the glass (at least) was manufactured by Nikon.  Maybe Towa machined the barrels and tops and did final assembly?  Perhaps that's what he meant.  I don't know.  Might go back and ask him some time.

Hey Jon

Nice Unitron box for sure. Couldn't resist a seldom seen box myself. Then had to find an objective just to put in it. :foreheadslap:

Damn rain...

I bought something very small. I hope there is some glass still in it.

I'm wondering if this is Cave. I have read rave reviews of the 6.6mm ortho-star. Did Cave sell a 6mm ortho-star as well? Is there anything about the focuser that looks familiar? I was thinking Edmund for the focus knobs or knob :)

Since the CN format changeover I haven't found a way to add a link to a post.

But if you go to eBay COMPLETED LISTINGS and put in  " Rsvp..Not So Handy Andy... star ortho " the listing should come up.

BTW, not a real good way to describe an item in a listing lol!

Oh, wow! Good job finding that.
