I suspect that the larger secondary is to give the scope's a larger fully illuminated field. Older scopes were designed around a 1/2 degree fully illuminated field which was fine for visual, but really too small for imaging. Modern scopes are increasingly better suited for imaging than their older siblings. I do notice the larger and brighter diffraction rings from the larger secondary, but it doesn't seem to have an adverse effect on general visual or imaging use.
