I just picked up a used PST 94930. It seems to work properly, but the lens is a bit on the orange side. Does Meade still repair these? Has anyone had it done out of warranty and how much would that cost? Thanks.

I called Meade. They still repair these, but the starting price is $150 + shipping. I think I'll hold off on that for a while.

I just received a second hand PST that was said to be rust free but upon inspection I have the same problem you do. SN 95292. I dont have anything to compare it too so I dont know how much I am missing. For $150 repair I could have just bought a new one. Buyer beware I guess.

I wasn't expecting to get a lot of use out of it, so I wouldn't have paid for a new one. It still actually works- I'm curious as to how much the rust affects the performance. I have a friend with an unrusted version I'm hoping to do a side-by-side comparison soon.

Hello All,

I received my PST last week, but was unable to put this puppy to work until today SN#: 108,979. Purchased brand new with the big Meade sale.

This is my first time using a Ha/Solar Scope. The views were instantly breathtaking. I was stunned by the views. The family was stunned by the views! And all in a compact little package.

For now I am mounting it on my 10" LX200 through the finder rings. Works quite well!

I also am using my Meade 5000 series HD-60 eyepieces on it. They work great with the PST. Images are wonderful!

The rust problem - this has been discussed in many older posts and is related mostly with older PSTs. It is a result of the degradation of the ITF coating. I think this problem has been solved with all newer models.

SN 105656. Purchased BN on 5/18/09.

Disturbingly, I just found this paperwork when recently transferring the foam from the carboard factory box to a new case. I never sent in my registration/warranty card.

I'm wondering if it's too late. Or if the address has changed. Did Meade own Coronado in May of '09? Of course, it's been so long that the warranty is long expired anyway, but I suppose I should get it registered.

Also, I keep all my receipts for astro purchases, but can't find this one, for some reason. Grumble.

Update: Good new for me, it's blue and looks perfect...

Calling Meade yielded "we don't keep those kind of records"

Which is funny because when I called Rikki at Lunt last fall to talk to her about one of my (Lunt) solar scopes, she asked for my serial number. She then told me my name, the dealer from whom I purchased the scope and the date when the scope was shipped to me. Now that's record keeping.

I just had a chance to test my 'rusted' unit with one that had only a slight bit of rust in the outer edges. Since the sun is so bright, I thought maybe the rust didn't matter that much- so much light comes in, I was hopeful that the rust didn't matter much.

WRONG.

Using identical 25mm Orion Plossl eyepieces in both units, the non-rusted scope was at least 5 TIMES brighter than the rusted unit.

Sigh- I guess I know what I'll ask for my next birthday- PST lens repair!

Just bought a used PST.
I wasn't aware of the rust issue when I bought it but the views seem to be ok.
took an image with it.
I really have nothing to compare it too.
Wonder if it worth sending to Meade to have it repaired.
Serial # 95467

Posted Image Just acquired 95860 used. Appears to have tiny spots inside objective, like looking at a star chart. Not sure if this is worth sending for fixing.

Is there a thread discussing PST problems?

I decided to send it off to Meade for repair.
It took about 8 weeks and cost $156 to repair.
The views are better now with the new blue objective.
So serial #95467 modified to the new PST type.
The images seem a little more detailed .
Added an image that I took with it.

S/N 98581 bought brand new in October '05. Rust began to develop about 2 years ago but performance degradation was very gradual. Returned to Meade in November '13 with quoted 6 to 8 week turnaround. Received in early March '14 after numerous phone calls; parts shortage was claim. Received with brand new deep blue objective. They mistakenly double billed the repair, charging when received and when sent back to me but a phone call fixed that right away. Views are beautiful, very bright, contrasty and detailed. Bottom line, improvement is worth the $165 but be prepared to wait a bit after Meade has it.
