The threads are already pretty loose, so at higher torques the aluminum tends to gall and make it hard to move the screw. It makes fine adjustment impossible, and is just getting worse. I'd talk to Orion about warranty and replacement, but the problem would be the same with a new one.
So, my solution is to drill out the threads, get threaded steel inserts and put them into the casting with a jam nut so they won't turn. That way, all the friction of adjustment in the future is steel against steel, and there shouldn't be any wear problems.
