Quote:I want to upgrade my focuser on my Orion ST120 F/5 OTA to a dual speed crayford. I'm looking at this one from Agena for $155.00 with the dovetail mounting base for $11.95 but Orion sells this one for $127.49 so it's a little cheaper than the GSO from Agena. Anyone have the focuser from Orion and is it comparable to the GSO?Thanks Doug

Quote:The main difference is the GSO's are rotatable the Orion is not, I went with the GSO on my 120ST.

Quote:Jon,Another step to take in fixing a Synta focuser, rather than NOT tighten down the four screws that hold the plate over the pinion gear, is to stack small washers under the plate before tightening down the screws. I described this in a thread titled "Synta Rack & Pinion Focuser Fix" back in April of 2010. Stacking the washers allowed me to tighten the screws without worrying they would come lose and fall out, yet still retain a lighter action than without the washers in place. It made a substantial difference in my ST80 and my C4-R.

Quote:Jon,On all the Synta rack-and-pinion focusers I fixed (four ST80's and my C4-R), it took three washers on each screw. Four washers were too many, and with two washers, the focuser action was too tight when the screws were tightened down. Of course, it all depends on the thickness of the washers used. Mind, this still doesn't give the focuser a luxury feel - it just makes the focuser less annoying.
Quote:Jon,It sure sounds like I need to look at adding those Teflon strips! I would love to take my focusers that I can only describe as "less annoying" to the next level! I've always been concerned that I would not get the correct thickness of the Teflon strips. With your information, I'll be good to go - thanks!

Quote:Jon, Do you still have any of that PTFE left for re-doing the ST-120 focuser pads? I'd like to buy some. Wanting to do mine since I saw your write-up. Thought maybe you could recoup a little for incentive
Quote:Rats, I was just getting ready to ask if you remembered where you got that 0.015" stuff from Jon. I recall a month or so back we discussed this very thing. At the time you said you thought the Scopestuff 0.09mm (0.004") PTFE adhesive tape was too thin, and I kind of suspect you're right. But Jim's other thin size is 3/32" thick which will no doubt be too thick.
Tonight for some reason my GSO 2-speed seemed to be giving me "issues", and I'm about ready to go back to a good ole R&P. Just have to get it working really well first.
