Quote:At the recent Astronomics grand opening I had a chance to chat with a Celestron rep and he told me that Celestron is preparing to roll out an upgrade to the CG-5 very soon, which means a lot of decent used CG-5s will be available on the used market. It is a proven and versatile mid-cost EQ mount and should be supported by Celestron for some years to come; the Meade mount is now obsolete and would only ber available used. With the CG-5 you can choose the enw upgrade or the current model in used or new.
Quote:Once again I remind all that the LXD75 mount is not out of production, it is marketed by Synta as their Skywatcher EQ3 mount, it is just not being sold by Meade any more as the LXD75. That said they are available right now usually attached to a 6" f5 Newt. that as I remember suffered from an absolutely terrible focuser. Mechanically the EQ3 is identical right down to the counterweight. The software would be a modern firmware. That said as an owner of an LXD75 mount I feel the CG5 is a superior product.

Quote:Well I picked up a CG-5 from the classified here (Thanks Dan!) and it showed up last week. WOW! This thing is incredible. I haven't had the chance to drag it outside yet (clouds - of course!) but just set up in my garage it's worlds apart from the flimsy little Meade tripod system I've been using for the last ten years.
Never really been one to buy into all the bigger and better hype, I'm normally just happy staring into space, but this thing is gonna make a huge difference. Been bouncing around the idea of picking up a used c8 (for a couple of years ) and may just talk myself into it now.
I'd like to thank everyone here for the help! Greatly appreciated.
What some may view as an argument I view as a different perspective.
