Camera Puchasing Recommendations
Why We Wrote This
This thread is not intended to give advice as to what camera to buy; rather it is intended to advise on selecting a reputable vendor. It has been written because of the existence of unscrupulous vendors in the camera market who operate in the US according to what is, by now, a well known strategy to dupe buyers. (If you're buying outside the US, as far as we know you don't have to worry about this particular issue).
Since these businesses change their names frequently, there is no comprehensive list provided here. Instead there is a description of the methods they use and an explanation of how to spot such businesses.
The method works like this: advertise a camera at an impossibly cheap price, and when an order is placed, the vendor calls the buyer and pressures them into also purchasing accessories at vastly inflated prices. If they refuse, they will be told that the camera is on backorder and will take a long time to arrive, or the order will be cancelled. This is if you're lucky. They may claim to have already shipped. Don't believe them. They haven't. If you finally insist on cancelling the order they'll tell you you've been "blackballed" and will never be able to order over the internet again. Don't believe it.
How to Spot a Deal You Should Consider Ignoring
These are the primary clues that the camera offer you're looking at might be worth avoiding:
1. The camera is significantly underpriced. Check the price at a reputable dealer, such as B&H Photo, and use that as a reference. If you see the same item offered for much less than that (say, more than 20% less), it's probably too good to be true.
2. The same vendor offers accessories such as CF cards, batteries and lenses at grossly inflated prices. Again, look at a reputable online seller to get a reference and compare prices for, say, a 1GB flash card. Check a few such items. This is usually a quite reliable indicator, since it's a principal component of the scam.
3. Check online for reviews, but don't necessarily trust "seller ratings" websites. Your favorite search engine will be quite reliable here. Search for the name of the website plus the word "scam". If the website is one of the described businesses, you'll quickly recognise reports of the selling method described above.
The above was written mostly by Duncan Kitchin with a tiny amount of input by me. We also have a list of "reputable dealers," but wanted to run this list by moderators first.

I would also recomend anyone who finds a deal (Be it a "Real" deal, or one of the "Too good to be true" deals), check with the ResellerRatings.com site and just enter the dealers web address... You can check the feedback for almost any website store here. Be it good, or bad, you'll find out all you need to know here.

I would also add that one should call and talk to the vendor. Don't order blind over the internet. When you do call, ask if they are located in Brooklyn, NY. Insist on an answer (well, you should be hanging up already if they don't want to tell you), and if the answer is yes- definitely do not order! Many of these places are located there. If you do a litle research, you will come up with some pictures of these so called 'storefronts', and horrific accounts that have already been described in this thread. Tom

What about this camera? Olympus EVOLT E-500. This comes with 2 lenses. I have a budget of $850 to spend. What would you recommend to buy.

Working on this - you may end up on a "Best Of" list stuck to the top of the forum, that way I can reduce the number of stickies but still make the threads very accessible.

A list is unnecessary.
Only one choice.
BHPHOTO. You get fantastic service, online stock inquiry, and the cheapest products anywhere.
Sure, there are others such as Adorama, but you can't beat BHPhoto.

I order almost exclusively from Adorama and BH Photo too, they are fantastic. Adorama has great overnite service and sometimes it's cheap - several times had equipment to my ranch in Spicewood Texas in less than 24 hours

Keep an eye open on Wolf and Ritz camera also.. When I got my 350D, I caught them with a price about $150 LESS than other stores... ($650 camera and lens).. It was a christmas special.. I didn't buy there, but I used their ad for my local photo store to MATCH THE PRICE!.

here is what i got for $950 dls - Canon Eos rebel XTi (400d unmoded)New - Canon Zoom Lens 18-55mm - Canon Zoom lens 75-300mm - 2 Gigabytes memory

The only issue for US buyers would be warranty - although St. Thomas, being a US possession, would probably qualify.

I've bought many items in US possessions, protectorates, etc., and since they're US dominion, all have come with the US warranty - good point, though.

Speaking of "grey market", Adorama sells all their Canon lenses in a "USA" or "Gray Market" option. The Gray Market is almost but not always slightly more expensive. Anybody got more clues than I what that means exactly?

Odd.. Usually Gray market is cheaper.. Because you are not paying the extras that the manufacturer is figuring in for warranty costs...
