This past weekend the weather was really nice here. I shot subs of five different objects on Friday and Saturday. I'm still trying to recuperate from those 2 all-nighters. lol
One of the objects I shot was the Blackeye Galaxy, M64. Since I used only 812mm of F.L., the galaxy was pretty small in the full-frame stack of sub-images. So, I reprocessed it in IRIS with Drizzle at a 2X enlargement setting. Check out the results I got after a close-crop:
M64, The Blackeye Galaxy. 18x180 sec @ ISO 800, 21x180 sec @ ISO 1600. Meade SN-8, MPCC, IDAS-LPS, Hutech Canon 350XT.

Thanks!
Drizzle will let you get more detail by simulating a finer pixel grid for the stacked output image. In my case, twice as many pixels as a normal stack. Drizzle was the technique used to get the detail in the Hubble Deepest Field image.

Excellent image of M64 -- how much more detail can you see in the drizzled image compared to a plain (un-drizzled) enlarged/cropped image?

I have an image stacked the normal way here. It was scaled 2X and then reduced to match the size of the drizzled image at the start of this thread.
This was about the best I could get it detail wise.

Mike, I also own a Rebel XT. Haven't done any deep sky objects yet. Just curious, what is the maximum exposure time you would recommend with the sensor in that camera?

The maximum I have done is 10 minutes for a single image. It was a limit imposed more by my mount's tracking performance and the local light pollution levels than the camera's limits, however.
I think the Canon 350XT's maximum exposure is only limited by the available power to keep the shutter open, but I could be wrong. I know some that have done 20 minute exposures with the Canon DSLR's, but I would consider that the upper limit from a practical standpoint.
I routinely use 2.5 minutes to 5 minutes for exposures on Deep Sky objects. That gives pretty good results and I can take enough exposures of one object to reduce the noise as much as possible in the final stacked image.

NICE !! Great shot Mike ! I really see the difference using the drizzle technique. The detail you got is quite extraordinary.
