Before pulling the the trigger, have you considered the Canon 450D (XSi)? A little more expensive than the 350D (which it replaces), but you get live-view and a much larger LCD screen -- I bet you'll be glad you paid the extra.

Although not in the original candidate list, I would suggest wait until Canon 1000D is out. It is supposed to be inexpensive and has the Live-PreView as a critical focus aid.

The 1000d aka rebel xs is in fact out, looked at it last week at my local camera store. This will be an great camera for the price, and very light weight.

If you review Steve's sample images of the brick school house you will see that the Canon 12 meg A650 Point and shoot is sharper than the Nikons and nearly all of the DSLRs, except the D2H. When used for digiscoping this camera does not have the vibration induced unsharpness documented on the "Birding Forum" for DSLR optical systems over 800mm. Gene Smith

Yes but that is a point and shoot without the ability to exchange lenses..also the 12mp imager has extremely small pixels and a much smaller sized chip(in physical dimensions)which would probably not work too well depending on the scope used...(IIRC)
A comparison:
The A650:12mp @ 7.6mm X 5.7mm
Nikon D50 6mp!!!!!!! @ 23.7mm X 15.5mm Hmmmmmm and the winner is!!!!!!!!!
Astro imaging in my experience has ALOT to do with FOV...(IMO) the bigger the better(as long as it doesnt hurt resolution)
Also I have used my D50 on my C9 at prime with absolutely NO vibration from the mirror "slapping" up...thats at 2350mm.Only if one was undermounted would this happen(IMO).
Of course the guru's will correct me if I am wrong on these..

The D50 lacks a shutter control line
This be the fatal weakness
The wireless remote control is very insecure

One of my feeling is:
Different target, the advantage is different
For deep sky
350D is a little bit better

Expect to handle behind is a key

Here's a point. Something I've learned as a newcomer to astrophotography: my own skills and experience are going to be the limiting factor for a long time to come. The minor details about median filters and lossless RAWs are "down in the noise". By the time the limitations of my D70s become evident, I'll probably be shooting LRGB with a CCD camera anyway. Or at least be wise enough to make some really informed DSLR choices at the time.
