Also available from Apogee, Inc. & Scopetronix at a lower price. I've had one for years on my 90. A worthwhile addition for any ETX owner.

Would it work with the DSX-125 as well?

According to the folks at Anacortes Bird and Telesope you have to buy a couple things to use the Meade f/6.3 reducer.

Scopetronix large accessory ring

and a

Meade eyepiece holder 1.25" for SCT

They say "[they] have only used this set up visually and have not tried with the LPI or DSI." Which is what I plan on doing. More research to follow.

Try this one, it threads directly onto your DSI, and its only $50!
I've heard good things about it as well...

There is also a .5x focal reducer available from Rini optics.

I just received mine this week. It's only $29 and the craftsmanship is great.

http://proptics.ieasysite.com/paul_rini_ganymedeb_005.htm

I have used it for observing only so far, but plan on using it soon with my DSI.

I will try to post my results as soon as possible.

There is also a SAC reducer that can be used with CCD imagers including the DSI.

Boy, I am glad I wandered over here today. I've been looking for a focal reducer for visual use on my ETX-125. How have you liked the Rini reducer for visual use? I swithced from a C-8 and an AR-5 to my 125 and have missed the wider field at lower powers.

I had been looking at the ATIK 0.5 reducer, but it has to be threaded onto the eyepiece. It looks lik you can just drop the Rini one in and then put your eyepiece in (almost like a barlow). This would be ideal since it would eliminate screwing the ATIK in if I wanted to switch eyepieces.

Plus, at $29 it's a steal.

Did you actually get 0.5 reduction, or was it a little more like 0.6 or 0.7 since the reducer was closer to the eyepiece? Any feedback you could give would be appreciated.

Thanks and clear skies,

Gary

I bought the Rini 0.5x focal reducer to use it for webcam imaging. It works well for imaging but not so well for visual use. I believe that it is advertized for imaging and not for visual use, anyway. I found also that its actual reduction was 0.34x rather than 0.5x. I have posted some comments about the reducer and some images taken using it on Weasner's site (http://www.weasner.com/etx/reviews/2005/rini_focalreducer.html).
Clear skies,
Giuseppe

they are both for larger sct's...that said they did make a ring that adapts to the larger sct threads ..that may work for the 125. I understand that the 3.3 can be tricky to use however and can only be used for photo work the 6.4 can be used for both photo and visual.

I'm interested but not clear the F6.3 reducer can be used with the ETX 90 with a sct accessory adapter for visual use.

OK so I get this cell adapter to SCT thread thingy, do the FR's screw over that or inside and can I use a diagonal now or what? I have a 125 and the LPI in the ep location is killin me. I would die to get this to F5-6

Hi folks,

This post is two years old. I'm looking for some updates.

The widest FOV with my ETX 105 and a TV Plössl 40mm is about 1.1°. I wonder if there is a FR that delivers wider views, and that I can use visually (come to focus) on the the eyepieceholder. I'm not looking for a photoback use.

Any visual experiences anyone?

I seriously doubt it because that must be near the limit of vignetting - in fact it may already be happening a little.

On the topic of focal reducer...
If a focal reduce reduces the focal length and moves the focal point closer to the len as described in
http://www.pk3.org/Astro/index.htm?scopes_barlow_focal_reducer.htm
How does the extension tube work?

I bought the Orion .5 Focal reducer(#52066) for the StarShoot camera. It screws onto an eyepiece but you need about a 2.5 in. extender. I used an old eyepiece barrel with an old 2 in. extender tube and it gives me 1.8X larger field of view with sharpness across the field of view. With a 25mm plossl the ETX 90 gives about 17x with 3 deg. with the focal reducer employed.

I bought the Orion .5 focal reducer(#52066) for their StarShoot camera. It screws directly onto an eyepiece. You must use an extender about 2.5in. I used an old barrel of an eyepiece with a 2in. extension tube and get about 1.8X field of view with sharpness all across. My 40mm eyepiece with the focal reducer gives about 17X on the ETX90 with about 2.6 FOV. BTW I noticed they don't advertise that reducer in their latest mag. Maybe give them a call.
