Yes I laid mine out in the yard where I was expecting to put it. Just to make sure about clearing the house and some trees. It is an easy prestep that cost almost nothing to do.
Well Jeff if you decide to make it this way your more than welcome anytime.

Only other version I've read about was where you have the tracks on top of the beams.

Great. I thought about making mine so that the beams that support the roof to rool off would be collapsable. Then decided I waited to long and it was getting to cold. Good thing because it rained and snowed not long after I got the outside finished.

well I was thinking somehow the support beams would have somekind of tires on the bottom and would be permanately attatched to the roof. therefore haveing the support beams roll into the side of the observatory and have a flush appearance.

It will be interesting to see what you come up with. It would be pretty tricky to do as any bump or resistance at the wheel part of your legs would transfer a lot of forces up to the leg connection with the roof. You would need some bracing, I would think and this may cause your flush looking closed position to be a little more involved.
I know when I was looking at the roll off roof my idea was to hide the support beams by turning the area underneath into either a raised bed garden or a lattice enclosed sitting area.

Remember the size is important because it puts the side walls closer to the scope which means you can't see as low. Mine is 10x 12 and perfect ze I think

Hi all I to am trying to design a roll off roof design and have received some wonderful tips and advice form posts such as this one. I am also thinking of building a 10 x 12 scope room with a 8 x 10 dog house ( I mean warm room).
I am looking for some V groove wheels for my roof and thought I had a sollution with wheels from "McMaster-Carr". Great price, 4", 800lbs capacity groove wheels....... But when I tried to order them I received this email.
"Jordy, Thank you for your order. Unfortunately, due to the ever increasing complexity of United States export regulations, McMaster-Carr can only process orders from a few long-established customers in Canada. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this causes you."
Does anyone know where else I might be able to purchase them??
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this question.

That sucks!
Ask McMaster if any of the customers in Canada is a retailer or distributor; maybe you can buy from them?

I agree with the others on size. I went with a 10x12 which looked big on paper. After you get everything setup it not so big. So go with the biggest roll-off you can.

Try these guys, Caster City.
Or these guys, Backyard Observatories. There are V-groove wheels down the page.

Thanks for the links I just ordered from castor city. I called first and they said they've never had a problem shipping to Canada.
Brad
I agree that 10 X 12 does look big on paper (to my wife it looks much bigger than it needs to be). Are you happy with the size of your observatory? Is it big enough for your needs?

Yes I am happy with it. A few more feet would have been nice for those nights when the family comes outs.

hehe I guess you'd have lots of room for storage and have a few visitors as well! If you ever decide on a larger scope, you'd be all set.

Ok....since you guys are talking about no over hanging tracks.......patent pending
Here's my own design:
http://www.pbase.com/amateurtom/_my_astrophotography
It's an 8'x14' roll over roof design. It has a 7'4" x 7'4" observing area and 7'4" x 5'8" warm room. Just enough room for all on a modest footprint. It has been constructed so it can be relocated in the future. Total cost excluding labor......$ 1,800
