      #1350159 - 01/09/07 11:01 AM Attachment (103 downloads)

Each month there will be a new category of target and this month just happens to be to a full phase Moon sketch. Please keep in mind that a mini tutorial should be written to explain how you did the sketch, so that others who have never tried this can learn from your example. So far Erika, Rony and myself have created mini tutorials, and I know there will be many others submitted soon.

Here's the sketch I submitted. After seeing it, you might want stop by the new sticky thread and have a look at the process used to create it.

Humongous effort Rich, the Moon is so complex, such a difficult target to absorb in the round, great job.

Fantastic hard work

Nice Rich!

I especially like how you caught the rays on the young craters.

It's stunning, Rich! And you even captured the glow reaching off the limb. Thank you for sharing your technique with us, too. It's really appreciated and I know these tutorials will be very helpful. I'm going to create a thread to store all the links to the tutorials so that we can use them for easy to find references.

Rich,

That is an absolutely incredible sketch!

Thank you for sharing your technique as well.

I considered attempting a sketch of the whole moon Saturday night, but I chickened out and sketched Taruntius instead (I'll post it when I get back from Miami).

Thank you Dee, Bic, Erika, Jason, Vedran and Rony!

It was a real gas putting this one together. At 87X the Moon fit in my field of view with a degree or so around around the orb. I find these sketches a relaxing break from the rendering of tight details as most of my sketchwork has involved recently. What's cool is that you can take your time. No real rush to chase the terminator.

Rich,

A beautiful observation of the Waning Gibbous Moon. You have rendered the ray systems of Tycho, Copernicus, and Kepler very nicely in your sketch. Aristarchus is a glowing beacon toward the northwest corner of the Moon. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Thanks Carlos, this one was a very relaxing sketch, mainly because I wasn't chasing tight details. Sometimes it's nice to sit back and take in the whole thing. I'm hoping you get a chance soon to do a full phase sketch and mini tutorial for the "New Monthly Target - The Moon" sticky thread. We'd love to see the Hernandez Method!

Gorgeous sketch, Rich! I've been enjoying the lunation threads in the Loony Bin, and I think the tutorial section for the full disc sketches is a great idea.

Hi Rich,

You've created a fantastic drawing of the gibbous Moon. It is obviously a sketch, but at the same time is a very realistic and detailed view of how one would see the Moon through the eyepiece.

Hats off to you and Erika and everyone who has contributed to the Target of the Month thread--it's an enjoyable and instructive read.

Best,
