Many sketchers here may be unaware of the new sticky thread at the top of the Sketching Forum index called " New Monthly Target - The Moon ". Each month there will be a new category of target and this month just happens to be to a full phase Moon sketch. Please keep in mind that a mini tutorial should be written to explain how you did the sketch, so that others who have never tried this can learn from your example. So far Erika, Rony and myself have created mini tutorials, and I know there will be many others submitted soon.
Here's the sketch I submitted. After seeing it, you might want stop by the new sticky thread and have a look at the process used to create it.
Sketch details:

Humongous effort Rich, the Moon is so complex, such a difficult target to absorb in the round, great job.
Fantastic hard work

Nice Rich!
I especially like how you caught the rays on the young craters.

It's stunning, Rich! And you even captured the glow reaching off the limb. Thank you for sharing your technique with us, too. It's really appreciated and I know these tutorials will be very helpful. I'm going to create a thread to store all the links to the tutorials so that we can use them for easy to find references.

Rich,
That is an absolutely incredible sketch!
Thank you for sharing your technique as well.
I considered attempting a sketch of the whole moon Saturday night, but I chickened out and sketched Taruntius instead (I'll post it when I get back from Miami).

Thank you Dee, Bic, Erika, Jason, Vedran and Rony! It was a real gas putting this one together. At 87X the Moon fit in my field of view with a degree or so around around the orb. I find these sketches a relaxing break from the rendering of tight details as most of my sketchwork has involved recently. What's cool is that you can take your time. No real rush to chase the terminator.

Rich,
A beautiful observation of the Waning Gibbous Moon. You have rendered the ray systems of Tycho, Copernicus, and Kepler very nicely in your sketch. Aristarchus is a glowing beacon toward the northwest corner of the Moon. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Thanks Carlos, this one was a very relaxing sketch, mainly because I wasn't chasing tight details. Sometimes it's nice to sit back and take in the whole thing. I'm hoping you get a chance soon to do a full phase sketch and mini tutorial for the "New Monthly Target - The Moon" sticky thread. We'd love to see the Hernandez Method!

Gorgeous sketch, Rich! I've been enjoying the lunation threads in the Loony Bin, and I think the tutorial section for the full disc sketches is a great idea.

Hi Rich,
You've created a fantastic drawing of the gibbous Moon. It is obviously a sketch, but at the same time is a very realistic and detailed view of how one would see the Moon through the eyepiece.
Hats off to you and Erika and everyone who has contributed to the Target of the Month thread--it's an enjoyable and instructive read.
Best,

Yes Frank! It reminded me of nearly something exactly that I would do. It was almost like looking at another strange person in a crowd that appears very similar to yourself and feeling that it is your twin.
I see that his entry is quite dated and I hoped that he might respond soon or enter another work as it definitely is inspiring; I believe it might generate interest for others to try this 'whole moon sketching'.

Mark, if you haven't already, click on this link (click here for the full lunar phase tutorials ) to see the monthly target for full phase lunar tutorials that some of our sketching members contributed to. You are more than welcome to put your own full phase lunar tutorial in there as well.
As for KraterKid (Rich Handy), he is an amazing sketcher/observer and was one of the pioneers that helped get this sketching forum going when we first started up. You can click here to see his sketch gallery.
Recently, he has had a lot on his plate that has kept him from being able to join in as much as he used to.

Thanks for this info. I was not aware that anyone else worked on full size paper of 19" X 24" as I see that most here in the CN forums indicate use of only the Artagain tablets of 9 X 12. I see that Rich has a lunar image of about 12" in diameter on that 19 X 24 page. I think it is interesting that he shows as you have in your tutorials also, to cover the entire lunar disc rendering with a base of light chalk where I tend to favor leaving blank areas of the paper exposed in my final work.
I know that that is the trick to get really good detail; to work large.
It may be some time before I can do much at the drawing table or the computer to write up and submit a tutorial as I have torn a shoulder muscle and have tremendous pain and temporary paralysis in my left arm. -I am left handed. Hence, why my last few works have been only 9 X 12, I cannot get the details that I like in this smaller format.
I was impressed to see that you too have sketched the whole moon. Very nice.
I'll consider writing up a tutorial in the future when I recover.
Thanks again,
Mark
