The contrasting magenta and blue renditions are very interesting when entire albedo features appear or disappear.

Thank you for the compliment on my Mars observation. It is interesting in being able to detect features at different wavelengths over Mars and the other planets. This includes a faint albedo (dark) feature using a red (e.g. Wratten 23A) or cloud (e.g. Wratten 38A) filter.

I've yet to observe Mars under good seeing conditions since August (back when it was only around 7"--and yet I still am only seeing about the same amount of detail due to seeing). I sure wish for a crisp edge of Mars' globe and an image that doesn't come and go with details. Maybe this is others' experience too and I'm not alone.
Daniel, it's probably a combination of high power and the fact that i don't really like filters for viewing mars. however i don't doubt their usefullness, i use a #23a orange filter and a sirius optics variable filter regularly and i'm very pleased with them. it's just that sometimes i prefer to view without filters. during the opposition of 2005 i didn't use any filters at all, perhaps that's also why i'm used to the very bright image of mars thru the ep  sometimes there's definately more to see with the right filter, and sometimes the view is better unfiltered. that's my opinion...
in my experience the sessions when mars stays crisp and sharp throughout long periods of time are not often. mostly it's somewhat as you describe; the details come and go with the seeing. don't give up, mars is still pretty big now. persistent bad weather really messed up my 'january-observing' too

here's a sketch i made yesterday under average seeing conditions. the shrinking phase is easily seen. i could see much limb brightening and some white/lighter spots just off the preceding edge. could that have been clouds or clouds on mountain tops perhaps? the area south of mare cimmerium (that's eridania & ausonia i guess?) had a greyish look to me.

here is a sketch i made of Mars from last week,the cm on mars was about 318 degrees,hellas was bright like a second polar cap, and the rough albedo features of syrtis major and the "pipe and claw' could been seen,this was only the second of mars for me this season, seeing very variable from clear to aweful,sorry for the delay in posting.

This is great you got a chance to sketch Mars.  Nice work. I also got a look at it a week or two ago but the seeing was terrible and I could not have sketched much at all. Our observing weather south of Chicago for the first half of winter has been very poor. This week ahead does not look good for us but I try to remain hopeful.

Excellent observations of Mars. You have both recorded a good amount of detail over the surface of Mars as well as clouds. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

thanks everyone, i've got the impression that my eyes are more adapted to picking out small details on the disk now. I don't believe i could've detected the sort of white spots and variations in colors in october when mars had about the same size as now as i saw in my last sketch.
too bad mars is shrinking rapidly again now though.

Thanks Frank,Sol,Carlos and Kris you guys are all top notch sketch artists,it was hard for me at 220x and variable seeing to make out much more than the rough albedo markings thanks to all of you for giving us a great view of mars this season.

here are two sketches showing the side with solis lacus showing. i had a much more detailed view of this area early january, but mars is now already 5" smaller again!
chryse & argyre appeared very bright, especially argyre looked as white as a polar cap!
