Kris,

Excellent observations of Mars showing the Solis Lacus region of Mars. You have captured several clouds over the Tharsis region. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

and here's another sketch from monday, seeing again fair.
it's much harder to see lots of details now with mars almost 10" again, i could only just detect solis lacus in this one. in this sketch the noth polar hood looked jagged.
every sketch could be the last one now

Kris,

Great sketches of Mars. I guess the time has come to ask you;

What materials and techniques do you use to yours sketches?

Thanks,

thanks Tommy, Sol, Frank & Stuart.

@ Sol: i think i'm still using a quite primitive method for my sketching. First i make my sketch at the scope with an A4 printer paper on a clipboard with a red flashlight attached to it. then after the raw sketch is finished in about 30 minutes time i redo the sketch, but in colour this time using some colour pencils.
first i add the dark features, then the yellow and a light touch of orange. smudge it using some demake-up cotton. to finish with the terminator edge i smudge again with some sort of black pencil to illustrate the shading.
usually all that's needed then is simply scan it it and adjust the sharpnes level and sometimes alo the brightness level. and that's it!

i enjoyed another sketching opportunity tonight february makes up for everything january lacked for me, except for the disk diameter...

i looked forward to sketching this side of mars and i'm also pleased with the result. seeing was a little better than the previous time and it's a relief for me that even at 10" mars shows pretty much details, i guess the solis lacus area is simply less contrasty then the area centered around sinus sabaeus

the north polar cap is big and bright, some limb haze was visible at the preceding side and i saw a bright area just below sinus sabaeus (can someone identify this? Carlos? ) chryse was also bright as was a spot i think could be Argyre (located at 12 'o clock).
the color on the sketch is a bit off.

i also had some fun trying to capture mars on photo, less succes this time, but if you look *very* closely you might just be able to recognise something

marsmap new [Re: frank5817]
      #2233131 - 03/03/08 11:49 AM Attachment (62 downloads)

Hi all, i'd just like to share a little map of mars that i puzzled together from all my sketches this opposition.
it's not very accurate or too detailed, but it's something i wanted to do for a while

the map clearly shows what sides of mars were viewed most, and were most detailed to me; syrtis major and one good view of solis lacus. the mare erythraeum region and mare cimmerium/mare sirenum area also are far less detailed because i had few good observations of them when mars was close enough to provide good views!

well, this was it, we'll have to wait about 20 months to view the red planet again...

Kris,

Very well done. Your efforts this winter gave me an opportunity to see Mars. It was very cloudy all winter at my location. Thanks for posting all your great sketches of Mars these past months.

Kris,

Thank you for your wonderful and accurate observations of Mars. You have recorded the red planet very nicely. Your map of Mars for the current apparition is excellent as well.
