Posted my first attempts at capturing images from my MCHP. They are located in the Mallincam Photos under Rob's First Attempts. I'm hoping the lack of color is a result of the light pollution from here in North Las Vegas. I've purchased a broadband light pollution filter and will give that a try on next attempts.

Not really impressed with the image capture software I inherited with my MCHP. It's Ulead VideoStudio 6 used with a USB capture device. Images can't really be enlarged without pixilation. Any recommendations on the best image capture software/hardware? I hear that Pinacle makes a better system.

Thanks for all the shared experience.

Hey Rob. First off, very nice grabs!

I don't think the the colorless issue is due to LP. I have a ton of it here as well, and my M42s look like rainbows. My guess would be either your capture software has a setting under it's proc amp section that is giving you the problem, or in the cameras menu under B/W they are all turned to the left.

Take a look and tell us what those are set at.

Rob,

As Neil suggested, wheck the W/B (white ballance). I set W/B to Manual with the Red 2 to the left of center and the Blue 1 to the right of center when I prepare cameras for shipment. This is because the CCD sensors have a higher red sensitivity.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

Neil/Jack,

I did have a couple of settings askew. The AGC was "On" rather than "Man" and the W/B was on "ATW" rather than "Man". I hope that makes a difference.

I found the PDF document for Mallincam settings. I now understand most of the setting options, but will have to experiment with them to see the effects. Is there a newer version of this reference?

Thanks for the help.

Yes, the B/W set to ATW will take away most of the color, but works well on the Moon. Set it back to MANU and you'll be good to go.

Folks,

I've posted some new photos where I was experimenting with the settings on the Mallincam while observing M42. I took Neil's advice about the B/W settings and then experimented with using the Preset of 3200K. Integrations were 2 and 7 seconds with variations in the sensing settings. Even at 7sec, I was able to reduce the sensing setting to x32 before the image started flashing. I was excited to see the color that was rendered in the photos after I switched to the 3200K setting.

The other set of photos is an accidental capture of a moving object in Orion. As I was moving back to M42 from another object, my goto wasn't very accurate and stopped just NE (I think) of M42. I think I identified the star field being just down and left of M42/M43. The object moves from right to left over about 30 seconds. My MCHP was on 2sec and I captured 13 frames once I noticed the object moving. With that narrow FOV it couldn't have been a satellite or other nearby object. I'm assuming that it was most likely an asteroid. If you choose to view the series of pics, view them as a slideshow to see the movement.

Take care.

Sorry Chris,

Didn't know it was inappropriate to mention the settings I used to capture the images I was referencing. I know it's been helpful to me to know what settings folks used to get a particular image. I didn't want to flood this particular thread with several postings of images, that's why I just gave the location and settings used. I'll limit any future postings to providing notification of the image locations, if that's ok.

Here's M42 captured with my 10" LX200GPS with both a Celestron 6.3 and MFR3 focal reducers for an effective f/r of between 3.75 and 4.5. I was experimenting with the B/W settings and captured this one with the B/W=manual and Preset 3200K setting. Integration was 2sec with sensing of x94. The Trapezium blows out the center but I thought the colors were nice.

I forgot to mention that the above image is a single frame unprocessed image. What you see is what I saw on the monitor as I captured it. I've since learned that my resolution setting was only 320x288. I'm anxious to try again at 640x480.

I'm setting up a web/blog page at www.scopegeek.net, if anyone is interested in stopping by and viewing the images of a beginner MallinCam user. The site is still under construction but is functional.

Hi,

I'm still alive!

After surviving 2 gruelling courses, I needed to get the observatory going again, so here's M42 with my B/W MallinCam Hyper and a 10" Meade LXD-55.

Enjoy! And more to come!

Hello,
Here is my first attempt at capturing an image using my Stellacam 2. The entire setup is new so Im still getting used to everything.
Celestron C10N-GT controlled via laptop w/ Starry Night Pro w/Stellacam 2 and old 13" TV.
Single 8.5 sec. frame, not very good but Ill keep trying,

Hi Mark,

Actually I think this is a very nice image wrt the star images which are nice and round. The galaxy shows up well and the background is very smooth. I'll bet if you stacked up a bunch of these, you would get a great image out of it!
