Just got August's issue yesterday, off the shelf in a UK newsagent, and it had the DVD on the cover.
Just watched it today, and IMHO the price of the mag was worth it for the DVD alone.
About 80mins or so documentary, detailing the design and building of the HST, early problems, through to it's eventual fate. On the way, analysis of many of the wonderful pics, including the DF and UDF shots, along with explanations of such things as star life cycles, planetary development, galaxy collisions, GRBs, dark matter, black holes, gravitational lensing, measuring the Universe, etc, etc
Thoroughly enjoyed it - and I haven't even got round to watching the 'extras' yet (although it looks like a lot of those may be advertisements)

I really enjoyed the DVD. I picked mine up at a bookstore. It actually explained some things that I didn't know as a beginner, about the size of the universe, star creation and fate, galaxies orbiting each other, very interesting stuff. I highly recommend it!

Not too start a flame war. But the magazines coming out of the UK, always have CDROMS with them. Like Mac Format, Linux Format, even the Sky at Night magazine, which includes a CDROM, every month with some of Sir Patrick Moore's shows. Link http://www.skyatnightmagazine.com/Default.asp?bhcp=1
A shame american magazine publisher's can't do the same. Magazines out of the UK always seem to be better.

I agree! When you are paying almost $40 yearly to subscribe, with no bonus, & elsewhere even in the USA, on the newstand the bonus is included; something's amiss! Not showing any appreciation for those that subscribe!

No bonus or appreciation?
You're paying $40/year when you could buy it on the newsstand for about $63. If that's not a bonus, I don't know what is!
The CD that is included on the newsstand has its cost incorporated into the newsstand price. Subscribers get a deep discount while newsstand readers pay more.
If you'd rather have the CD, then I'm sure S&T would be quite happy to have you paying full price for each newsstand issue and as opposed to a discounted subscriber copy!

The viewers that pick it up on the newsstand probably don't buy each month, would be foolish to pay full bore; whereas subscribers buy each issue year after year. Just saying that it would be a nice suprise to have one of the giveaways stuck in one of our issues once in a while. And since we are on the subject of fairness; my renewal letter from S&T came in for one year $42.95, which I submitted pmt for. The next issue I received had a "flyer card" saying one year for $37.95. So, is this fair? I'm not knocking S&T, but the yearly rate should be uniform across the board.
Also, the magazine has the subscriber's money for a full year or more in their hands, so they get a little bonus. I subscribe to 3 Astronomy mags, several other computer, etc., & welcome them being delivered to my mailbox, and I will continue subscribing.

Hi Todd,We just like to complain,I would miss the issue if I didn't get it.When I used to get S&T off newstand,I wouldn't buy the months that didn't have equiptment reviews or ones that I wanted to see,so I didn't pay as much as I do now to get it delivered later than you could pick it up on newstand:-)Regards Steve

I can understand the frustration but that issue has more to do with the distributor than anything else.
Magazines are distributed by a third party but subscribers also have to deal with a fourth party---the Post Office delivers the magazines once they receive them from the distributor---hence the reason for magazines sometimes being on the newsstand first. Definitely frustrating, but something that isn't easily rectified.
And Carol---I'd be phoning them and demanding the lower rate on the other card!

With a subscription to BBC Sky at Night magazine, you get a discount as well as the CD. Sorry but the company isn't saving that much, by not adding a CD. Look at the money they get from advertisments. UK just put's out better magazines. My opinion!. Go get a Mac Format, or F1 Live magazine and you will see what I mean. Plenty of Photoshop magazines and Windows XP magazines out of the UK, and they pretty much all include some sort of CD, with trials and goodies.

I just received my October issue and they have not hit the newsstands here, yet. From my years working in the book biz, I can tell you Todd has this one dead on.
Carol, give 'em call. What have you got to lose?

Well, since my check has already gone thru, I'm sure they wouldn't be sending me a $5 check for difference, probably a credit for a year for now; it's not the $5, it's simply why not take care of subscribers first! Carol

Actually, all kidding aside, they do a pretty good job of this. I've subscribed to many magazines over the years, and have at least half a dozen coming in the mail every month these days. Of them all, only Natural History has a customer service department that is as responsive as that of S&T. I've had two issues of the magazine go missing and had one mangled (when they were still in the plastic bag!) beyond redemption. All three were replaced at no charge, even though this problem had nothing to do with them directly.
They can throw out all the promos and special one year rates they need if that's what they need to do to attract new business. If it keeps them alive and slows the inevitable increases in subscription prices, that's just fine by me.

At least once a year I fail to get an issue of Sky And Telescope. I don't know if the distributor doesn't get it to the P.O. or the P.O. loses it. At any rate I simply call customer service at Sky Publishing and my missing issue arrives in a few days. Now that's customer service!!

Astronomy magazine will also send you a replacement for a mangled or missing magazine. That's happened to me several times with them and S&T, and both companies are very nice about it and send them out immediately.
Which reminds me: has anyone else noticed that the cover price for S&T has gone down? - Rick
