That makes two of us. Mine arrives from OPT on Tuesday.
Should we start a C11/CG-5 forum? I know I will need the help. You should join the Advanced Series Yahoo group if you have the chance: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Celestron_AS/

Looking forward to the reviews from both of you and congrats on the new scopes. Now no knocking the Astroscan, I had a terrific nights viewing using mine last saturday. I finally purchased the astroscan tripod which really improved the ease of use......

Ordered on Thursday and it has already arrived from California to the hub in Osaka, and is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.
That's pretty fast for UPS Expedited (didn't order Express).
Please god, let everything be in one piece....
(it's fully insured, but I do not want to deal with claims and having to return it back).

Hi all,
I just got mine on Monday of this week (three days ago.). I really haven't had a chance to give it a real workout yet but, have been playing with in my front yard. I hope to have enough experience with it by this week-end so that I can submit a reasonabley descent report to you folks. I will say however, at least up to now, I'm extremely happy with the scope

Got mine too, and so far, so good.
Though, as I wrote on the discussion forum, the tripod (with tripod stopper/accessory plate in place) moves when you're loading and unloading onto the mount, even with the counterweights already in place.
How many counterweights did you recieve with yours btw? I got two 11 pounders and also one 7 pound and one 4 pounder; the dealer said Celestron was supoosed to include three 11-pound weights. Juts curious what you got.

Hi Saburo76,
I recieved the three 11lbs. weights as advertised. Kinda' strange that you recieved a mismatch. Did the dealer tell you the scope came that way from Celestron? 11 lbs. is 11 lbs. no matter how you slice it though.

I thought it was strange too, and at first I wasn't sure which three (or four) to use.
This is the answer I got from the dealer: "You have the right amount of weight but not the right number. The telescope should have come with three 11 pound counterweights..... Celestron was in a bit of a hurry to get this new scope out and were probably using whatever weights they had made at the time."
Sounds like they were cutting corners somewhere to get the mounts out on time, but like you said, 11 is 11 no matter how it adds up. Perhaps this quirky weight setup will come in handy when I put another OTA on top.
How are you finding loading the OTA on to the mount? Does the tripod shift underneath when you load it on? Mine does, even with everything set up on the mount (all counterweights) and tripod (the leg stopper).

Really waiting for a good review of this scope!!!! It's a great deal even if the mount turns out to be a little iffy, but how iffy is the question. Figure the tube with a 2 inch diagonal and a 2 inch EP, plus finder, you'd be about 32 pounds. A little scary! Could the CG5 head be mounted to a pier?

Patience... I'm sure someone will show up with one. And if you REALLY can't wait, try doing a search on google under sci.astro.amateur that or you can always hit the astromart forums too

There is a CN article on the mount itself (not pertaining to a C11 on top though): http://www.cloudynights.com/lab/mounts/asm.pdf

I really think that the CG5 mount is going to be just barely adequit for visual use with a 11 inch sct on it. So, if you then need to upgrade the mount to a losmandy or CGE mount, you sell the CG5 mount for 500 bucks, then get a CGE on sale for $2,500, you would have $4,000 into the scope. You can get a Nexstar 11 for $3,000. It sounds like it would be better to just buy a Nexstar 11 or CGE 1100 in the first place.

I'm finding the 2" tripod legs to be pretty sturdy. I was observing the moon through typhoon spawned clouds tonight, and it was pretty windy, and the scope seemed relatively stable. If it would ever clear up, maybe I could test the tracking and goto, that would be nice. The weather has been horrible here. I'm not recommending anyone rush out and buy this setup, so spend your money any way you please. This is the combo I decided to get due to the good deal, and I hope it works out visually and we'll see how it works with the ToUcam - a ToUcam/mogg inserted into the eyepiece should not add much extra weight at all.

If this scope does work out visually I would buy one. You could use it as long as you need then someday maybe upgrade the mount if you really wanted. Having that 11 inch tube is the main thing.

Yes, my situation made this purchase a relatively sane choice: I wanted a mount with tracking that I could put my smaller 5" on, I wanted a new OTA (my old 10", is well, quite old), local prices for a C11 or bigger OTA are very high, and Celestron seems to say this setup will work at least visually.
If I were in the States now, I would most likely have a C14 or Meade 14" by now though. The comforts of home I guess, and good ol' affordable US prices (for gear made in China )

There is a great deal of differnce now that the CG5 has really heavy-duty 2 inch steel legs on the tripod. It does not do to compare with the Vixen mount, or even your upraded wooden tripod mount. These legs are really substantial and the mount will carry up to 30 lbs plus. If the accessories are limited, the mount will carry the 11 inch.

I've heard of a lot of guys making their mounts more stable by pouring concrete down the legs to add some more weight. Any reason why this couldn't be done with the CG5?

I guess you could, but it would be one heavy puppy! I'm not kidding. I just bought the CG-5GT and the legs are nothing like the thin ones you see on the previous CG5 or the Vixen equivalent. They are not just thick, but pretty darned heavy, and not aluminum, but heavy-duty steel. I plan to mount the Intes MN66 on it, wich has been improved from 19 1/2 lbs down to 15 1/2 lbs and have no doubt that my mount will handle it. I would not have have thought of putting this scope on the CG5 with the standard tripod.
Anyway, I don' think you would want to put concrete down these legs, which are 2 inch diameter and would hold a whole bunch of concrete! Unless, of course, you want to use it as a permanent pier.
