My computer locked up, & the only way I could get out was to unplug it. When I plugged it back in, during startup, a window opened that said:
"Checking file system on disc C. One of the discs needs to be checked for consistency.
Stages 3.
CHKDSK Verifying Security descriptors"
What does this mean?

It means it lost power when it did not expect to and thinks it may have left a mess on your hard drive.
It's cleaning up said mess (if indeed it made one) when it does that.
If you tried ctrl-alt-del, choose shutdown and that did not work then unplugging it is about your only choice. You're the boss, not it. Some days you just have to force that point home. SHOW NO FEAR!
Perfectly normal - the chksk thing. Freezing seems to be normal for computers at times too.

When you unplugged the computer, it -might- have corrupted/lost a/some open files. Chkdsk is a program (actually, and old DOS program) that cleans up these "loose ends" on your HD and verifies your master boot record. Most likely, there is no cause for worry. Worst case, you might have to reinstall Windows.

All the more reason to rush out & get my backup system! Yep, it would respond to CTL-ALT-DELETE, or anything, couldn't even shut it off with the on/off button.

I was thinking exactly that, when this happened. I've been putting off as I didn't know what I wanted to use as backup.
Won't put it off now.

Remember it all too well; at least all that could happen then, would be to misplace your notes.

Point for the future: if the PC does not respond to the power button, hold it in. If the PC is already running, the power button is normally ignored for 5 seconds or so. This is to prevent accidental shutdowns and the afore-mentioned hard drive mess. There is another power switch on the back of the case near the power cord that will get you immediate results if needed.

The first computer I bought had nothing but problems from day 1. I used to call the customer service line and tell the rep that I had the phone in one hand and a hammer in the other and if he didn't help me I was going to beat the computer to death with the hammer and send it back to them. The 3rd time I called they sent me a new computer, after I got it I beat the old one to death and sent it back to them. It was a liberating experience! TOS prevent me naming the company.

That really sounds a lot like my fist (and only) store-bought PC. That experience goaded me into building my first, and I've built all my desktops since.

I really haven't had much of a problem with this computer, I've been really happy with it. This is the first time this happened, which is why I was spooked!

I did hold the power switch (front) in for over 15-20 seconds, with no results; that's why I unplugged it.

The only sure thing about a computer is that it'll die some day. You can extend the life by putting in a new CPU fan about once every 12-18 months and vacuuming out your power supply exhaust monthly but it's still going to go belly up someday.
It's also less hard on your system to just leave it on all the time as opposed to turning it on and off several times daily...but with 'always-on' internet connections that leaves you open for other problems.
A good DVD-Writer makes an excellent backup system.
I find high end Asus, Abit or Gigabite motherboards are good for about 2-2.5 years tops for me but I tend to run my systems a little hot.

I realize a computer's life is not forever; this is my third. With DSL, no, I don't leave the computer on round the clock; I'd rather shorten the life by turning it off once a day, than taking a chance with a hacker, etc.
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking at getting a new computer, & using this one as a backup.

Carol: There should also be a "reset" switch, which should always be tried first before the power switch.
One should always have an anti-virus, firewall, and anti-spyware installed. I use AVG, Zone Alarm, and Ad-Aware. I use the paid versions of all three, as I still get the Geek Discount, but they're no all that expensive if bought street price.
An excellent all-around utility is System Mechanic 7, which I've used extensively since v1.0. SM does have some quirks...

Hi Rusy, Thanks! Yes, I have Avast anti-virus software protection, as well as Sygate firewall.
I also, from time to time, check out my system on "Shield's Up":
