Well, today I bought the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus external HD unit, and also the Acronis backup software; as I was told the mirror image with the software that comes with the Maxtor wasn't as reliable.
Also had to get a new keyboard.
And a new printer.
Guess that ought to do my "office" for a while.

Carol, The shop that I work at bought the Maxtor One touch. I have not been impressed with Maxtors software. In fact, in the last month, I have not only had two files that did not back up, but also thoses two file wiped off the computer "With out a trace". So I hope the Acronis backup software is a whole lot better.

Carol, Have you tried the Windows native backup software? I don't know what version of Windows you have but I use Win XP Pro and haven't found the need to use 3rd party backup software.
My system uses a Western Digital network drive. The first backup capture the full contents of my system. Then everyday only the files that have changed (or been added) are automatically backed up.

Marcus, I'm running XP Home. I wasn't aware that the XP backup would capture the full contents of my system. I'll check that out; I haven't opened the Acronis software as of yet.

Hi Carl: I'm not using the Maxtor software, at all. The computer "guro" at Staples told me that it wasn't totally reliable, thus suggesting Acronis. All the leading computer mags have praised this software, as well.

Carol, There should be an option to "Backup Everything on this computer" or you can select the "Let me choose" option. The latter is the one I use. I select the "C:" drive and any other drives that are physically connected to the PC.

For XP Home you will have to install backup from the XP CD.
Look here for the instructions:

If I am not mistaken, the Windows Xp backup package does not create an image file that can be used to restore the the system in the event of a crash. Acronis creates an image file and also provides a means to restore individual files from within the image.

Windows Automated System Restore (ASR) does not create a singe image, but it will allow a complete restore of you system in case a drive crash. No 3rd party software is needed. The Windows backup system also allows single file restore.
"ASR is a two-part system; it includes ASR backup and ASR restore. The ASR Wizard, located in Backup, does the backup portion. The wizard backs up the system state, system services, and all the disks that are associated with the operating system components. ASR also creates a file that contains information about the backup, the disk configurations (including basic and dynamic volumes), and how to perform a restore."

Carol,
The computer guru at Staples actually knew what he was talking about. Wow, that's unusual!
Acronis is a truly superb backup solution. Their Disk Director and True Image Server software has made life a lot easier for me on many occasions. I have about 12 computers in my house. 7 or so are Dell Servers in a 19" rack with two T-1 lines. They heat the basement of my house. I use Acronis to clone disks, change partition sizes, etc.
If you set your Acronis software to backup your entire hard drive weekly to your USB drive, you'll be very well protected against permanent data loss.

My wife just threw our MP530 in the driveway. She got tired of it not working. Every time it "thinks" the ink is empty in one of the tanks, an alarm is set and the entire machine is useless until you replace the ink. You can not clear the alarm without replacing the ink tank. The other day it decided the yellow was empty, but it was about 3/4 full, and that was the end of fighting it.

I got one of those about a month ago for my jobsite office. It's a sweet little unit. High quality scans, relatively quick printing plus the convenience of 2 paper trays and a document feeder. Mine gets pretty heavy use and I love it!

This worked for me. Just press and hold the feed button for 5 seconds and then while still holding it hit the Stop/Reset button. I did that after my last refill and the error screen went away and it prints fine.

Carol, I think you'll really like your Canon printer. We've always had Canon and they are top of the line, in my opinion. A couple of weeks ago our Canon printer finally died after many years of use. I wanted to get another Canon, but my husband wanted to get the cheapest one available (won't mention brand). It's OK, but just not the quality of our Canons in the past. Wish we'd bought the Canon. The one we bought was supposed to be one of the better printers for pictures, but it can't hold a candle to our Canon. So, enjoy yours! You'll love it!!
