Eye fatigue and sausages
      #1540254 - 04/12/07 04:56 PM

Although I was only out looking at the Pleiedes / Venus confrontation for a few minutes last night , and that through the Nikon 10 x 42 SE , my eyes seemed to be suffering from fatigue for a while afterwards .

Then I remembered I ate two sausages yesterday morning , on toast .

I wonder , is there any officially acclaimed link between eye fatigue and sausages ?

I usually eat bacon on toast for breakfast , and on those days never seem to suffer from eye fatigue .

They were pork and beef sausages by the way -- cooked to crisp .

Regards , Kenny

I can state categorically that Mexican chorizo sausages have never affected my eyesight either positively or negatively. Chorizo is a pork product, however, and it's ability to influence my visual acuity may be limited by its lack of beef. Chorizo and eggs is an excellent breakfast, though!

Kenny,

This would have been funnier if you had called attention to the word "link" in some way, either by quotes or your usual use of CAPS. In case the pun is lost across the pond, "Links" as in sausages LINKS. Here's the rewrite, with word order and punctuation corrected:

"I wonder, is there any officially acclaimed "link" between sausages and eye fatigue?"

< Were the two sausages alinged correctly? >

Rich ,

I think you've hit the nail on the head there !

I suspected a slight misalignment as soon as I saw them , and considered posting them off to Bill Cook , but realised they would probably be cold by the time they arrived in Seattle , and the contraction due to co - efficient of cylindrical expansion of pork and beef would probably have affected the outcome in any case .

Apparantly the cooling curve of cattle is slightly less pronounced than that of pig , and this causes a slight curving at the ends of the sausages ( refered to in the industry as pigcushion distortion ) .

Regards , Kenny

Kenneth of Oscarmayershire,

All that saturated fat and cholesterol in the greasy bacon may be serving as an eye lubricant whereas the even fattier sausages may have clogged your eye ducts.

Unfortunately, in your arteries, that bacon grease has the opposite effect, particularly on men at your advanced age. I recommend you switch to whole grain oat cereral with skim or 1% milk, or soy milk. Also, take Omega-3 supplements to counteract the years of bacon grease, and use artificial tears to lubricate your eyes.

If the condition still persists, I'll write you a prescription for a Fujinon 10x50 FMTR-SX. It's possible, you need a larger exit pupil and more aperture.

Brock ,

That would have been funnier if you'd prescribed a Danish military 10 x 80 rather than a Fujinon 10 x 50 .

Hello Kenny!

Next time try some HP sauce.

(On the sausages, that is. )

Yes, it would have. Touché!

You never mentioned if you were using the 10x42s handheld or mounted, however, since you only had them out for "few minutes", I'm guessing handheld. As I'm sure you know from reading BVD, 10x bins when used handheld can lead to eye fatigue, though it usually takes a lot longer than a few minutes to have that effect. But perhaps with stargazing, where the jitters are more bothersome, it takes less time to have the same effect.

For terrestrial use, I find the 10x42 SE more demanding on my eyes than my 8x32 SE. I have not tried a 10x50 Kestrel (another one that got away, though minutes later I bought an 804 FMC Audubon from the same seller on A-mart). If the Kestrels' view is as easy as the Audubon, switching from the SE's to the Kestrel on "bad eye days" might help when you need 10x.

Since putting artificial tears in my eyes before bed, I find I have less eye fatigue when using binoculars. I think the reason I developed dry eyes was from looking through binoculars and being in front a computer screen all day, fighting the glare from overhead lights. When you have glare on your screen, you tend to squint, and you don't blink as frequently. With binoculars, people tend to stare through them w/out blinking.

Try consciously blinking more when you are using binoculars, preferably away from the EPs, since blinking can squirt "eye wax" on the lenses.

Dear Doctor B. ( of CV PA ) ,

On the advice of another CN member , who shall remain nameless for at least 10 minutes , I've been using artificial tears four times a day for almost a year now , and it has really helped me with my dry eyes problems .

My report of suffering eyestrain following that 10 minute hand - held session with the Nikon 10 x 42 SE was just a complete fabrication to give me an excuse , or bridge , over which to introduce a bit of beef into the forum !

The Nikon 10 x 42 SE seems to perform more impressively for me for stargazing than it did for Bill Tschumy when he compared his with his 20 x 90 Oberwerk and a 22 x 60 Takahashi he had on loan at the time .

See Bill's review of the Oberwerk 20 x 90 v Takahashi 22 x 60 in the CN binocular forum mini - reviews section for the full report .

Hi Kenny,

How about 20 minutes? Nice to hear something simple that helps. Carry on.

Hello Peter ,

Good to see you " slumming it " down here in the sixpenny stalls !

According to my watch , that was an impressive 18 minutes , as opposed to the 10 minutes I predicted and 20 minutes you so modestly asserted ! :-)

For about three and half moments , I thought your mention of 20 minutes was a reference to the period of time spent looking through binoculars , as opposed to the time lapse before revealment !

Based upon Bill T's review mentioned earlier , I'm also predicting a magnification closer to 18x than 20x with the 20 x 90 , when it arrives !

I hope I'm right :-)

Regards from an exceedingly tearful Kenny :-)

Kenny,

"Slumming it"? Nonesense, Cloudy Days has matured into an active, interesting forum and those who don't visit or are unaware of it are missing out. I always check and read the posts here. I just can't contribute as much as a diurnal person, like yourself, can.

I really wanted to say, "carry on birds" but thought better of it at the last moment.

< I really wanted to say, "carry on birds" but thought better of it at the last moment. >

In that case , Peter , I'm glad you thought better of it !

It's finding the perfect balance between birds and beef which can be so challenging at times on forums such as this .

When I was a cast into unexpected fatherhood at a very young age , someone , who shall probably remain nameless for considerably longer than yourself , once wrote a very nice letter to me , which included a sentence which mentioned birds and bees .

Unfortunately , earlier that morning , not only had I consumed several sausages of considerable girth , on toast , but had forgotten to apply my artificial tears , and as a result , misread the sentence , thinking it was all about the birds and the beef .

Regards , Kenny

Kenneth, the Fabricator,

Well, I knew that British beef had a "tainted" reputation after the Mad Cow outbreak, but I didn't think The National Beef Association of England was so desperate as to recruit commercial heating "Engineers" to promote British beef!

Surely, there must be a TOS somewhere prohibiting this sort of sneaky commercial solicitation.

Where's ECHO? ECHO? Echo? echo? echo? ech... ec?

Since your eyes are well lubricated, I suggest you take some prunes or a glass of prune juice at breakfast to help lubricate your plumbing to allow all that fatty, low fiber food out the back door before it backs up and clogs the space between your ears!

This message was brought to you by the International Prune Association: Making bowels move isn't just our business, it's our "duty". Do your "doodie" by puttng a prune in your spoon today.

Good to see you back! I was trying to listen to the news to see if there had been any earthquakes, mudslides, or forest fires in So. CA that may have left you w/out an Internet connection. But with the blitzkrieg coverage of Don Imus's comment on "sappy headed hoboes", it was impossible to find out what was happening outside the New York Metro area.

I also think that Kenny should be reprimanded for trying to pass off what he apparently considers a "parody" of Cream's "White Room" by merely changing ONE letter! (Room to Moon). I suggest a new TOS requiring that at least 30% of the song be changed in order for it to be posted on CD as a parody. I wrote a much more creative parody, but unfortunately, it is not "PG" enough for our "14 and under" forum, so I will have to send it via PM.

P.S. I noticed the red moderator balloon matches your horns. Nice touch!
