Which window to look through?
      #930986 - 04/27/06 03:32 PM

When I looked the first time through a 30 old double glass window with my Swarovski, I was quite surprised about the good and sharp view. But with an other glass with higher magnification, it wasn't sharp any more at all...

Does this depend on the magnification? Or the quality of the glass? I can't understand the big differences!

And which kind of glass would be good for a clean sharp view looking through? "Full" glass for example, without space between..? What do the birders mean..?

Dynamite,

Your experience is the same as mine. When looking through my window with my 8x25 and 10x50 the images seem sharp, but with the 20x80 it never appears to be really sharp. When I don't look with the 20x80 through the window the image is sharp. Yes, to such a magnification you can use the binocular through a window and get a sharp image, but at higher powers it will not appear to be sharp.

But why is it like this..? The focus is both times somewhere out there...

Ans what kind of window-glass do you have? Also old "bad" or new ones?

PS: last summer I was in Lulea, too. I love Skandinavia!

Dynamite ,

Before I can even ATTEMPT to answer your question ( and I'm not at all sure that I'll be able to ANYWAY ! ) can you confirm that what I THINK you are suggesting is correct ?

I'm ASSUMING the following to be the scenario !

You looked through a 30 YEAR OLD double - glazed WINDOW using your Swarovski 8 x 56 and views were sharp .

So far so good , I hope ?

It gets a bit more difficult now ! :-)

Are you THEN saying , the following ?

Then , using a binocular of HIGHER magnification , the manufacturer , model , actual magnification and objective size of which WE know NOTHING more about , you looked though ANOTHER window , a DIFFERENT window , which may have been SINGLE glazed , DOUBLE glazed , TRIPLE glazed , the views were not as sharp as they were wheh using the Swarovski looking through window ONE ?

Or , are you saying the following ?

Looking through the SAME 30 year old , double glazed window , but this time with a binocular of HIGHER magnification than 8x ( but again , make and size and actual magnification not stated ) the images were not as sharp ?

I'm GUESSING , that regardless of WHICH ( if indeed ANY ! ) of the above speculative statements on my part is TRUE , then you are ALSO asking which type of GLASS WINDOW ( as in single glazed versus double glazed etc. ) is the clearest to look through .

Is THAT correct ?

But finally -- last but by no means LEAST , what has ANY of this got to do with BIRDERS ? :-)

I hope that MY questions are not even MORE confusing for YOU to understand than YOURS were for ME !

Regards , Kenny

Dynamite,

Nice you have been in my home ground! What did you do here?

My window is a quite new one. An older (real old) window you don't even get a good image with the naked eye...

I guess that the distortion through a window to a certain magnification will not be significant but at such a magnification it will appear. I understand what you mean; I think also that it's strange that the difference can be so huge between 10x and 20x.

Ok, Kenny!

-- You really remind me of a lawyer ;-) --

It was tiwce the same old double glass. Once with 8x (>sharp) once with 20x (>NO WAY any sharpness!) - I can't understand this difference.

Second question: is there any glass at all to deliver a sharp view with a 20x-bino? Or is there only better and bader glasses..? Actually, which is the clearest to look through?

I just thought that birders might be wachting their animals sometimes through windows (especially in winters).

Thanks Dynamite ,

All seems much more CLEAR now , apart from the views through windows with 20x binoculars , that is ! :-)

I've found the BEST windows to look through with binoculars are OPEN windows !

UNLESS of course , you have CARL ZEISS windows :-)

Hei Patric

We were flying to Oestersund and than travelling to the west and afterwards up the coast till the Nordkap; than back through Suomi and Sweden, and from Lulea back to Stockholm and Switzerland...

Ok, your window is new. With exactly the same effect.

My window is that old, that even with the naked eye the view isn't really good - but with the Swaro it is good (even better..?). With 20x, it doesn't work. Confusing...

Hmm... we should ask a physicist...

I agree that this is really confusing...better through the Swarovski than through the naked eye.
Though the Swarovski SLC 8x56 is a GREAT binocular it still seems to be against the nature of laws...

I remember reading somewhere that "clear float" single glazed windows are pretty good to look through.

I can imagine this - perhaps I will mount such a glass...

If I wanted a high quality window to look through with my binocular I would pick the BaaderTurbo Film.

Going back to the ORIGINAL question here , which was :

" Which window to look through ? "

Given the " U - certificate " nature of this web site , I feel it inappropriate to answer this question in a truly honest way ! :-)

Clear windows !

Hi folks,

Just say NO--to windows that is. A house window is glass (mostly silicon). As such it is considered a fluid but not a liquid, or, a really, really slow moving liquid. Really.

Seriously, tho, a fluid will displace over time, e.g., 75-100 years or so.

Please take Kenny's advice and use an open window. On the other hand, simply conduct your tests outdoors when weather permits.

Regards all,
Dave.

That's not my main problem...

Sure, outdoor is better concerning optics. But if you have temperature differences of about 30°C, it's more comfortable to look from the warmer site.

I often look through windows at home with my telescope, and I have found that the quality of the view depends on the individual windows. Two windows af the same type can be vastly different when observed through at higher magnifications. Some of the windows in my appartment can support mags of 100x, while other is blurry already at 45x. There also seems to be a big difference between viewing strait through (good) and viewing at an angle (worse). And i dont support the views from some here that the best window is an open window. As long as there is a significant temperature difference between inside and outside the view through an open window is absolutly unusable even at 45x. All this with an 8'' reflector. All my windows have double glass and are around 10y old.

Regards

Jostein

Thanks Jostein

In Tromso, I was too! With beautiful girls in a disco :-)

You're right, the angle is also to consider. It makes quite a difference... But as I wrote, it's over with sharpness at only 20x, that's strange, isn't it?!

The Great British amateur astronomer Robert Allcock discovered a comet whilst looking through a window.
He had memorized the positions of 30,000 stars

I read somewhere that it was only 29,995 stars !

Which just goes to prove that you can't believe EVERYTHING you read :-)
