Well I am at 45d north and 500m elevation and have grown habaneros on a number of times. bought seedlings in the spring and burned me a new ( ) in the fall.

We have far too many habaneros this year. I pride myself in being able to eat hot peppers, but habaneros are a bit too extreme for me. Maybe just one in a dish, but anymore and I lose my daring do. My wife had some jalapeno and serrano seeds left over so i planted them in a window box and hope to harvest some this winter. the window box i can bring indoors.

Indefatigable,

You need to get rid of your land lady and aquire some land so as to better pursue your agricultural interests.

Nooooo, I like my landlady, she actually shares the garden with me. I live in her basement and we both putter around back there.

It sounds like she has some grand plans that will take up the whole garden bed next spring, and she said I could use containers for my veggies. (This is probably to get back at me because the acorn squash, which was my idea, tried to eat the whole garden this year. )

So... I'm going to need those containers next year for something, if I want more than just peppers. Really, I'm just making excuses, because they would be two enormous pots of dirt in the house.

Acquiring land is something I will not be able to do for a very long time.

I believe it was in Abbie Hoffman's "Steal This Book" that I read that it was still possible to homestead land in Canada. Probably not anywhere near Toronto, but somewhere. I am sure too far away. Sorry to hear of your land predicament.

Regards and clear skies,
