Great information, thank you both. It's a sunny (but cold) day out there. I'll have a good look at the little babies. They were bare root trees and very young.

You're welcome. And babies is right--life can be hard on a young tree. But like babies, before you know it they've gotten big.

Twenty years ago, when these trees were in my nursery, they were as big around as my little finger and about a foot tall. Now I'm climbing around in them with my chainsaw and other pruning gear trying to shorten them.

What great photos, and you've got a beautiful place there!

I've checked the apple tree babies and they don't have side branches yet, but are about 2' high. Should I top them off to promote side branches?

Thanks, Erika. I designed the house to maximize solar gain. It's built into the hillside, oriented to the south, and lined with double paned gas filled windows. The overhang allows the low Sun to shine in during the winter while throwing shade in the summer.

If you didn't prune the tops when you planted the babies, you should do so now, but if they are only 2 feet high, don't cut off more than a few inches. You'll get some side branches as well as a new leader. If you get vigorous growth this season, you'll want to head back the leader again (lightly) next winter to get some more branching higher up the trunk.

Great. I'll nip the tops off them today.

Our house is orientated similar to yours, into a hillside, facing the south and our double french doors are double paned with porch roof that allows shade in the summer, sunlight in the winter through the french doors. I wish we had more land, but we are surrounded by farmland and woods belong to the family of the girl we bought the house from. So it's nice that we can still have the benefits of living in the country only not have to take care of it all. I always though I'd go back to farming some day, but I don't believe I want a herd to take care of anymore.

I'm so late to this thread. And so envious of your orchard!

I grew up in orchard country. That I have no room for one here pains me. I'd love to have a variety of fruits and nuts. Hopefully in a few years I'll have a suitable place to plant.

Good luck with your future orchard, Tom.

My orchard came into bloom last weekend. I'm holding my breath because we're under a freeze warning tonight. Here is a view of the orchard looking south.

What a beautiful countryside! Is that rhubarb already coming up like a house on fire? Do you collect and sell your apples, too?

Pegster, I'm so happy that Paul and I moved back out of town now and can have a little area for our own orchard. The problem is, I'm running out of room for everything I want to plant!

Thanks, Erika. Yes, that is the rhubarb bed. My wife Judy made a strawberry-rhubarb pie the day I took the image that we have been enjoying all week (store-bought strawberries).

I start picking apples in July when the Yellow Transparents come in and pick until the end of October. I sell apples to people who come out to the farm and also sell at the local farmers market. Got a break last year--because of the unseasonably warm March and hard freeze in April, I had 4 apples on three acres of apple trees. Not 4 bushels--4 apples.

Oooo! Tough break.

A lot of farmers in central Washington have lost crop to freeze this spring. It's gonna be a tough year.

A freeze like that is unfortunate. It looks like it will be a good fruit year here this year, if nothing happens.

Here's the view from the house. You can see the nursery as a narrow brownish-white streak just above the center of the image. It is about a quarter mile from the house. The orchard is between the house and the nursery.

I just finished planting new trees in the nursery. The new grafts are protected from the wind and the deer by the white tubular shelters, which also serve as mini-greenhouses--one of the best investments I've made. Ungrafted rootstocks (hard to see in this pic) are unsheltered. I use Liquid Fence to keep the deer off of them. The nursery is also surrounded by electric fence.

This is from the nursery looking back at the orchard. The house is out of sight. All the trees in the orchard started out as babies in this nursery.
