I second the motion. I would not volunteer to animate though, I suck at spotting comets!

You are correct by saying the asteroid belt is near the ecliptic but not all asteroids reside there. Asteroids, especially near earth and Trojan asteroids, can be slung into all kinds of orbits. The asteroid belt is not as dense with asteroids as many think. In the past, the paintings of the solar system invision the belt teaming with rocky material when in reality, it is vast.

Comets are essentially "Icy" asteroids that lose their ices as they near the sun. When they lose their ices are they now asteroids? Or as they just a meteor swarm with nothing larger than a car? Thats anybodys guess....

Hi Sam,

I looked on the web to find the article in question ... alas, no luck. It's a couple of days old now, and I checked the newspaper's website, but there's no mention of it that I could find. I'll keep looking though. It was a fascinating article.

I'd be interested in a comet sub-group. Believe it or not, I've never actually seen one. I lived in Toronto until recently ... the light pollution from my back yard rendered all but the brightest stars and planets invisible.
