I will be returning this year a well Wednesday to the last Sunday. Catch me and my group "The Red Light District" aswe have come to be know as for our red lights around all our tripods. I love this event also, geat get away, dark skies, and I get to show the public much more then my usual out each programs here in Phoenix.

The moon will be weird this year but by the last few nights it shouldnt be to bad. I am planning on doing some imaging after the crowds leave on one or two nights as I picked a Hyperstar and a CCD a couple of months ago. But I will also be out with a 10" dob as well hunting down those faint galaxis and neblas as well!

Hope to see you all there!

I imagine that the moon might keep the number of astronuts down a bit at the beginning of the week, but the "Red Light District" occupants don't usually show up until mid-week.

Considering that the purpose is outreach to park visitors, and the personal observing is a nice-to-have added benefit, the primary mission is well-served with the moon rising at around 10PM the first night, then progressively later. The visitors like the moon! You might have a couple of hours by mid-week. Plus, as I recall last year, didn't you have the imaging going on with one scope while you did show-and-tell with the other? Those bus headlights are a bit annoying, eh?

See you there!

Skylook,

I usually wait to do imaging after mid night when the skies are at their darkest and the crowd is gone. So I am not sure what I will do, you might see me with different scope from the night before. Hyperstar one night and visual the next. Just have to see what I feel like setting up. If I am doing imaging I will be way in the corner so I do not bug anyone with my Lap Top screen.

But yes last year I managed double duty with imaging a visual (I would like to see someone else do that!)

I will be doing the same at the All Arizona Messier Marathon but its easier with no crowds. I will have a imaging scope and visual.

The bus lights to get annoying but as long as you cover your eyes when they go buy your good, the moon wont be a problem either, I would love to see the Canyon lit by the light of the moon. Either way it will be very nice.

Oh and yes me and the "Red Light District" will be there Wednesday and will be there the rest of the week.

Bump, and a reminder that if you plan on attending this year it would be a good thing to make your intentions known to Dean Ketelsen as soon as possible; contact information is at:

Inside 120 days to the start of GCSP 2008. If anyone will be vacationing in the Grand Canyon vicinity between June 21 and June 28 this year, stop on by the Yavapai Observing Station for South Rim activities. On any particular night during the week there will be from 50 to 80 telescopes set up for visitors to enjoy. The dates this year were chosen to allow more families to attend while complying with the Park's request to not impinge on the July 4 weekend.

GCSP 2008

If you'd like to set up and help share the skies with park visitors, please check the link above and contact Dean Ketelsen, Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association, for South Rim coordination, or Steve Dodder, Saguaro Astronomy Club, for North Rim coordination, as soon as possible. Contact information for Dean and Steve is on the above web site, along with an overview of the event, area attractions and activities, and lodging information.

There are several threads in this area on past GCSP adventures. It's quite a bit of fun sharing the gorgeous views with park visitors. Every night's different; I've had as few as 25 people come by, and as many as 600. Generally, the visitors tend to disappear around the time of the last shuttle bus through the area, so around 11PM or so the sky belongs to the astronomers. No need to bring a scope though; if you're not in the elite few fortunate enough to attend BEOTS II, and you'll be in the area, drop on in. And during the day, the Park offers so much in the way of geological, cultural, and biological adventures.

Hope to see you there! Come early, come often.

Three months (92 days) to GCSP 2008. Hope lots of those reading this will stop in for some great observing experiences. Susan and I will try to make the whole 8 nights this year.

Anyone else want to chime in with plans to set up for a night or eight, or even to drop in and use one of the 60 or so instruments in place?

60 Days. Time to plan for a night or seven at the wonderous Grand Canyon National Park.

Drop by and enjoy the views through 60 or more telescopes on the South Rim, head on over to the North Rim (1000 feet higher!).

If you want to set up with the gang on the South Rim, let Dean Ketelsen at Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association know:

Grand Canyon Star Party 2008 Information

For North Rim information, check with Steve Dodder at Saguaro Astronomy Club:

One month (well, 32 days) until GCSP 2008. Might be a smaller gang of visitors and astronomers with the current fuel prices.

Stop by to visit, or, if you plan on setting up a scope for the show and tell, contact Dean Ketelsen for the paperwork through one of the above links.

Anyone out there planning on showing up?

My fiance and I will be up there from Thursday afternoon to Sunday morning. I had planned on doing a presentation about telescope making, but with the strict anti-commercialism stance of the Park System and my recent jump back into the custom Dob market, I'm thinking they may see such a program as an advertisement.

Regardless, we'll still enjoy ourselves. We're flying into Phoenix Tuesday of that week and then will leave early Thursday to make the four-ish hour ride north to check-in to the Maswik Lodge at the South Rim. Unfortunately we're not bringing a scope (just a pair of Oberwerk 15x70 binos), but hopefully we can scope-mooch.

See you up there!

Good to hear, Rob. I've been cc: on Dean's emails, trying to learn the lay of the land since this is Dean's last year as major domo. The park is very sensitive to "advertising/marketing"; interesting, since most scopes have manufacturers' logos on them!

View-mooching is what GCSP is all about, and I don't think it will be possible to get bored. And you are coming at the right end of the week; seems the apertures grow as the week goes on. I usually start out with two of the biggest apertures among the 20 or so folks set up nearest me, but by Thursday there usually are quite a few 20" trusses and 12-16" SCTs horning in. This will be my first try at all 8 nights; been stopping at 7 up until now, so I don't know how many hang on through Saturday night. We'll be in Yavapai Lodge; Maswick is nicely located for many features. See you there (look for a small gray stuffed dinosaur mascot (Scoposaurus) on the nose of my 18").

Skylook, my group and I "Red Light District" as we are known as (for our red lights around our tripod legs) will be up once again from Wednesday to Sunday. I dont care how much gas is it will not keep me away from a dark sky! Tho this year will be a mix of stuff for me as I will have a total of 3 scopes!

Hyperstar imaging on the 8" one night.
Visual on my 10" probably every night.
And if the deal goes through a Orion 100ED for scooting around with.

I look forward to those skies every year.

Yeah, my friend Jim Palmer actually helps Dean out by printing out all those paper star maps for the public. We head down there about a week or two before hand to give them to him and then we get a tour of the U of A mirror lab. I guess this will be our last one for a while becasue he is retiring. So yep we are all taken care of. But thank you!

Coming for third time to GCSP, albeit not until Friday, I hope that my black Johnsonian (presumably on the lower field) will not deceive me again with burnt electronics or missing cable.

We plan to stay until Monday (kids want some hiking) and then move to Lake Powell for day of boating and end at the Monument Valley. Ahh, the Scorpio crawling over the Mitten...

I know I cant wait. My Orion 100ED will be arriving this week along with the white light solar filter. I also got a hold of the original Coronado telescope, the Helios. So I will also have that piggy backed on my Orion 100ED for solar. But I love the GCSP its a nice get away.
